Waltham Windmill golfers close in on International Pairs UK finals
WALTHAM Windmill golfers Mark Dennis and Beryl Garrett have moved one step closer to a dream trip to the International Pairs UK finals.
The pair have reached the global golf competition's regional finals after winning their qualification event, held on their home turf.

Dennis, who plays off a handicap of seven, and 17-handicapper Garrett scored 42 Stableford points to beat off competition from 32 other pairs.
The duo will now travel to Belton Woods in September to compete for a place in the UK final, which will be held at De Vere's Wychwood Park, Cheshire, later that month.
There they will have chance to qualify for the finals that will be held at The Carrick, on Loch Lomond, from October 6-8.
International pairs is the largest competition of its kind in the world for club golfers.
Ross Honey first conceived the idea in 1998.
Initially an event for club golfers in Hampshire to celebrate the millennium, the competition has grown to involve more than 30 countries, including the likes of America, Canada, South Africa and Nigeria.
Meanwhile, at Cleethorpes a grandfather and granddaughter partnership won the Pecket Cup – a mixed, family foursomes medal competition.
Fred and Holly Clyburn, who is set to represent the Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup team in Massachusetts from June 11-13, scored a magnificent net of 70.5.
It was a particularly impressive score since nineteen-year-old Holly, from Cleethorpes, now plays the course off a minus two handicap.
Husband and wife team, Jane and Malc Cannon, finished second with net 72, from third-placed Jan and Tony Dann, who scored net 72.5.
Another Clyburn sibling claimed victory in the Clive Gibbins Salver.
Carla Clyburn, partnered by Maureen Meadows, won the ladies event with net 70, on countback from Margarite Cadey and Ivy Whiting.
Jan Dann and Gwen Farmery, on net 71, claimed third place on countback from Barbara Bayliss and Margaret Hewitt into fourth place.
At Grimsby , 48 ladies played a medal round for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution Trophy.
Francis Warner had the best game of the day, winning with a fine net score of 70.
Sheila Dunk, with a 72 net, finished runner-up.
The club has sent a donation to the RNLI charity.
FOUR green-keepers at Kenwick Park Golf Club played four rounds of golf in one day to raise money for charity.
The quartet walked over 20 miles as part of the longest day golf challenge to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity, recording two stableford scores on each hole.
Cheered on by club captain Clive James, director of golf Eric Sharp, assistant Diana Watkinson and course manager Geoff Henderson, the players set off at 5am.
Steve Green, who plays off an 18 handicap, got off to a flying start with a birdie on the first hole.
His playing partners – Lewis Hackett (four), Simon Lidgard (seven) and Neil Pridgeon (five) – are all single figure golfers.
The team scored an excellent 91 points on their first round.
Just after 8am, they were back on the course to score a further 89 points.
At 1pm they began their third round, in which they scored 83.
And after a superb team effort in the fourth and final round, the points total rose to 85.
The final climb to the 72nd green was completed at 7.40pm.
More than £1,300 was raised for charity.
The team's efforts could also be rewarded by a trip to Portugal – if their total of 348 points is enough to see them qualify in the top four teams nationally.
The quartet wish to thank the club's members, families and friends who sponsored them.
JUNIOR Michael Gilboy has won the John Warren Shield at Immingham Golf Club.
Gilboy's winning score was 72-5-67, with Jamie Franks second on 80-12-68.
Meanwhile, 86 members competed for the Truman Trophy, which was played off a maximum 24 handicap.
David Birkitt won on 45 points, from Michael Hewitt (41) and Robert Bemment (40).
A full entry of 150 players took part in a Children's Charity Golf Day held at Louth.
The day raised £2,000 for St Lawrence Special Special School, Horncastle, and St Andrew's Children's Hospice.
The men's section was won by K West, C Barnes and K Haddon, on 79 points.
S McLellan, D Jones and S Teanby won the women's section with 68 points.
D Parkinson, E Bell and R Chambers topped the seniors with 78 points.
The special group was won by D Smith, P Mitchell and M Fuller, on 61 points.
PAUL Haylock has won the Remembrance Trophy at Tetney Golf Club.
In overcast conditions, with players playing of the white tees in a stableford format, Haylock won division one with 37 points.
Countback was required to separate Mike Payne in second from Graham Hayward in third.
Both players returned 36 points.
Division two was topped by Fred Chappell, who scored 36 points. Second was Alex Anderson on 34.
John Brackenbury finished third, on 33.
