Duo elected to represent North East Lincolnshire's students in UK Youth Parliament
MEET Macaulay Wright and Jawid Hassani - together they are the new voice of young people in North East Lincolnshire.
The Havelock Academy students were yesterday elected to sit in the UK Youth Parliament, where they will represent the interests of our young people for the next two years.
The pair polled 666 votes out of almost 3,000 cast in schools across the borough.
As reported, they were one of six teams campaigning for the chance to follow Jordan Hagerup as the area's young representative in Westminster.
As they announced their victory in a school assembly yesterday, the pair made a plea for ideas to help improve life for young people in North East Lincolnshire.
New youth parliament member Macaulay, 15, said: "I am ecstatic. It's a really big surprise and I'm really looking forward to representing the views of other students."
His deputy Jawid, 15, said: "We want to improve the reputation of youths in our area. We are trying to find areas where they can use their energy, like youth centres that are already running, and get funding in those areas."
The pair will attend three regional conventions, a national sitting and a debate in the House of Commons each year.
