FISH and chips is a favourite takeaway dish, so with National Chip Week coming up from next Monday, I couldn’t resist trying out a chip shop I have heard good reports about.

We drove to the cleverly named takeaway Mick’s Plaice, in Caistor Road, Laceby, which is located in the heart of the village.

For a Saturday night, it was fairly quiet, but we had a nice warm welcome by the staff... and the smell of the chips, of course!

I ordered a fish cake special (£1.70) with chips (£1.15) and mushy peas (70p).

My dining partner ordered large fish (£3.50), with chips and mushy peas again.

It didn’t take long to place our order, but while we were waiting we had a nice chat to the staff.

Altogether, it cost £8.45, and we couldn’t wait to get them home to satisfy our rumbling tummies.

After a short drive, we got back home and rushed to grab our cutlery and tomato ketchup.

We were a little worried the food might be cold, but it wasn’t – in fact, it was piping hot.

My fish cake special included two medium-sized battered cakes, which were delicious. They were not greasy and had a nice hint of herbs.

My chips were divine and there were plenty of them. You usually get a few black bits in a portion, but these were all perfectly formed fluffy potatoes – delicious! It was even better when I dipped them into the mushy peas.

My partner said his fish was fluffy and white, and had a tasty batter coating. He even said it was the best fish and chips he has had so far this year – and we try out a lot of chippies!

Mick’s Plaice is a real gem, and is well-worth the drive. It was a top-class friendly service, and the real star of the meal was the delicious tasting chips.
