Eating Out: Great food and atmosphere at The Spice of Life
EVERYONE loves a curry to tuck into and this flavour-kicking meal was hard to beat ... and plus the service was great!
We decided to visit The Spice Of Life, in Wellowgate, in Grimsby, and we had a warm welcome from a waiter who guided us to a comfortable seat.

The Spice of Life, Wellowgate, Grimsby
We did not expect the restaurant to be busy being after the Christmas and new year period, but it was buzzing.
We ordered poppadoms and pickles to start with. And the poppadoms were warm and the pickles were a good size, because we didn’t run out and the mango chutney was a winner for me.

The service was very friendly and I felt relaxed in the modern surroundings.
Shortly after, our mains arrived and I had a chicken peshwari (£7.95) with pilau rice (£2), pictured, and my partner ordered a chicken makani (£7.95) also with pilau rice (£2). The makani is normally mild spiced, but my partner asked for it to be medium because it said on the side of the menu the chef can make it as hot as you want.
About 15 minutes later, our meals arrived.
My peshwari was very mild and the sauce was delicious with a creamy, nutty taste. And the chicken was divine with it being cooked in a charcoal oven – it added an extra element to the taste.
There was just the right amount of food.
The pilau rice was delicious – it was light, fluffy and had plenty of aromatic spices nestled into it.
My partner’s makani dish was still very mild and it didn’t seem the chef had added more spice – but it was still mouth-tinglingly good – in fact it was pretty similar to the dish I had. Again, the chicken tasted fresh and had a good texture to it.
Once we were full-up, our plates were cleared immediately.
We were then offered a complimentary drink on the house, and I chose a Baileys and my partner had a brandy.
I thought it was a nice touch ... and I got a rose from the waiter at the end!
Overall, a fantastic dining experience and the food was very tasty. We couldn’t have asked for more.

“I was very disappointed with Spice of life after ordering a takeaway from there, when our food arrived it did'nt look very nice at all and when we tried it we could'nt eat it as it taste very nice at all, we have currys from various places and have never had one so bad, my partner rang to complain and was told the manager was'nt there and they would get him to ring us when he was, still waiting for for them to call, guess that will never happen though as that was about 6 weeks ago now, cost us the best part of £20 to just throw it in the bin and end up eating sandwiches, not very good customer service at all.”
