WOULD a direct rail link from North East Lincolnshire to London make a big difference to the economic regeneration here?

And would the passenger numbers make it a viable option for a rail operator – the last thing we want is for such a service to start, only for it to stagger along for a few months and be withdrawn.

Well, the answer to the first question has to be yes.

Good infrastructure and transport links are essential if business is to be carried out successfully.

Here, we are indeed at the end of the line and anyone travelling from the capital knows just how off-putting it is to switch from the fast, hi-tech London train to the link facility from Doncaster.

So yes, to have a fast, efficient and straight-through service could well open up a lot of doors, especially those of potential investors.

In answer to the second point – does its usage depend on the price or the demand, based on economic activity? Well, probably both – if heavily promoted and reasonably priced then surely success will follow.

North East Lincolnshire could well be a powerhouse of industrial activity – and actually, we are not doing too badly already with the consolidation of the frozen food industry and a good renewables future. Maybe this rail link could well unlock the door to a better future.

“We had through trains to London and they were empty until Lincoln: after Newark they filled up. There is no way that electrification will come to N.E.Lincolnshire and the HSTs are getting too old. It is doubtful that a rail link would bring in any industry as what we had was not closed down due to transport problems.”

“I definitely think we need it. The train to Doncaster is so slow that in most cases I've found when I drive there it is quicker. I do the journey to London quite often, and another thing I find that is a problem is there always seems to be a 40 minute wait at Doncaster on the way home, because the service only runs every hour. I think it would be brilliant in peak times to increase the service to twice hourly. Although, a direct service to London would be the best option. It's time we caught up with everywhere else and got an electrified line.

We might have industry in terms of food production.... but how about other sectors such as design, media and what not? We should be doing everything we can to make it easier for other sectors to thrive. A better rail link is a step in the right direction.”
