DO we have too many towns in North East Lincolnshire and not enough people or visitors to support the facilities that all the towns want?

In Cleethorpes the Parkway cinema is great and attracts a lot of people, especially in the evenings – bringing in a vital night-time economy.

Now wouldn’t it be great to have the same in Grimsby.

Yes, it would be – but surely unrealistic to think that the two towns could sustain a cinema in each. Maybe for the big blockbuster films, but otherwise it is unlikely to be financially viable.

Do leisure centres and sporting facilities not fit into the same bracket as that talked of above?

Currently there are facilities scattered all over the place – the majority are aging and in need of major refurbishment.

And can it honestly be justified to have so many to serve the population?

So the sensible thing to do is certainly to look at containing these facilities – with perhaps the exception of Cleethorpes’ swimming pool, which attracts a healthy tourist trade.

On paper, it makes financial sense – if you create one facility it would be more cost effective and much better used as a central hub for sport and leisure.

However in the present economic times such a plan brings forward its own challenges as pennies will only stretch so far.

And the public will understandably have something to say about the loss of facilities near to them – amenities they value and support.

“At least for the time being the pool has been given a reprieve. Being centrally sited with good transport links enables the pool to be accessible to many of the town's residents. However it is not only used as a base for swimming ,there is a small exercise studio used throughout the day.Every weekday evening from 18:00-21:00 exercise classes take place and these classes are very popular demand often exceeding capacity. The small ,but well equipped, gym is also well used. Yes the building does need work and refurbishment so spend the proposed monies here . Keep a central facility don't replace it with a more inaccessible site.”

“I have never in my life read such blatant council fed propaganda!

What makes sense is to have adequate facilites that all of the people in NE Lincs can use. You say we should contain all the leisure facilities, apart from Cleethorpes, in a central hub. What about Immingham?

If there is to be a central hub for sporting activities, then it at least should be of a reasonable standard. Building a new 25m pool makes no sense whatsoever. Ice rink?

Why not simply take the available money and renovate Scartho and Grimsby Leisure Centre? The council are saying it will cost £1.5 million to bring Scartho pool up to speed, and that is too expensive, yet they've got £6 million to spend? Am I missing something here? £1.5 million is less that £6 million isn't it?”

“Scartho baths is close enough for my family to use and it has proven it's worth in the time it has been there, especially during school holidays. As for the amenities in Cleethorpes, my family rarely use them, they are too far to travel to, an hour's bus journey or 2 and too inaccesible via the current transport system for many young people to use in reasonable evening hours. I often wonder why so many young people wander aimlessly around the estates in Grimsby in the evenings and it is in the main due to the cost of using the facilities (cinema, bowling alley and pool) combined with travel costs and the infrequency of public transport. Personally I would welcome more leisure facilities in Grimsby, particuarly if sited well and accessible via public transport and reasonable costs. As for the possible closure of Scartho Baths, I would be against this decision because I see it as a valuable resource that is accessible for the communities it serves. I thought in the current climate of tackling teenage and childhood obesity, especially in this area, and in line with the government's drive to encourage us all to have healthier lifestyles, all effort should be made to hold on to sports facilities not get rid of them leaving just inaccesible and expensive alternatives?”
