Editor's Opinion: Could Meridian Park be succeeding?
WE read today of the council's efforts to justify the building of the famous 'white elephant' that is Cleethorpes' Meridian Arena.
It was dubbed 'white elephant' due to its well-documented shaky start, with criticism over the cost and the amount of use.
However, have we turned a corner with this arena?
In hindsight, you could say that, yes, it was expensive.

But we have seen it open its gates this summer to a whole host of community events, none of which would have been staged elsewhere in the resort – nowhere has the capacity for such outdoor activities in a safe and confined space.
The majority have been extremely well attended and most by the local community – take Smileathon at the weekend, the arena was the perfect place for it to start and finish.
Obviously the weather is an issue in this country, and as a result events do suffer.
But all in all, if the arena can continue to be used and opened up at reasonable rates for the good of the community and for local people to organise and stage successful events, then its success will continue to gather momentum.
So, possibly it is time for the criticism to stop – the arena is there, so let's make the best use of it for the good of the community of North East Lincolnshire.

“Sydney22. Given it was a Gay Pride kind of event (and it's about time this area joined the rest of the world in recognising different life styles aren't an attack on one's own) is ''...beggars belief'' the right expression shouldn't the 2nd vowel have been different...?

“Never yet seen it full to be honest, went to the armed forces event which was good but only half the area was full. The Olympic torch was a bit of a let down to be honest.
Still don't think it was worth the FIVE million was it to build somebody/ies must have made a tidy sum out of this of course will never know who.”

Really?
So, people should stop making comments about the ridiculous PR put out by the council when everyone knows it is a load of cobblers? Only 30000 people in the whole summer, over all those days and all those hours. That is nothing to crow about. Why should we stop commenting on such blatant propaganda?
In fact is is more likely that people have been attracted to the arena by the businesses than the other way around!
This thing was a white elephant, it is a white elephant and it will stay a white elephant unless it is properly developed and run. It should either be made into a totally free amenity to the public as a park is free, or it should be re-constructed as a true events venue and run in a professional manner. Then people will stop moaning about the costs and facilities but not until then.”

“This past Sunday 9/9/12 I walked past the Meridian Park about mid day and later on about 2.45pm ditto the open air kiddies paddling pool. The Meridian Park was devoid of people, the paddling pool devoid of water and children to enjoy the last hot weekend of the year. This hot weather forecast was known 5 days previously.
1/ Why no entertainment at the MP.?
2/Why the paddling pool closed.?”

“Its all lies guys... All the "events" are funded by grants from NELC (i.e. YOU) like Grimsby Pride who got 20k of taxpayers cash. The only reason these grants are avaliable is to justify the arena, so it is an event bigger white elephant than you can ever imagine. No commericial events have been a success there so it will just guzzle taxpayers cash to put on this bogus "community events" that are fully funded by NELC.”

“it is telling that classical pop and solid entertainments pulled out of using the arena citing the weather but all outdoor gigs are at the mercy of the weather so i would suggest that it was more about the capacity/cost etc.
the costs are clearly still an issue for local or national promoters. The last tribute night with coldplace was over £40 for a family and was poorly attended. It's not exactly positive to simply say 'well its there now so get over it' that avoids the lessons that should be learnt from the wasted resources ploughed into this white elephant mostly I feel by a lack of consultation with local people by the council about how to develop cleethorpes organically rather than just a few councillors having an ego session in a closed room
On the plus side the ditching of the private promoters who managed no single event there has at least led to more community access which i guess is to be built on but the millions spent could have be used in so many better ways.”

“"The majority have been extremely well attended"
well i have never seen it more than a quarter full
and entry is too expensive for a family , and getting to it is by one bus the 9A
i would love to see some actual attendance figures”
