ASK any individual who is looking for work and they will tell you that it is not easy.

But it is out there – there are jobs available, decent ones and ones that will give people satisfaction, money and prospects.

However job-seekers have to put themselves out there.

Obviously that is not always easy – commitments and financial constraints may well mean that some people simply cannot.

Work experience is one of the best ways of proving your worth, commitment and dedication.

Some may scoff, complaining it is slave labour and exploitation.

Is it? Or is it a means to an end?

If a person is good and goes along to a company offering themselves for work experience, they may just get a break.

If not and they do well, it still looks good on a CV to say you have had experience – and there are the references too.

No, it is not ideal to work for little or nothing – but unfortunately we do not live in an ideal world and people must look at every option available to them.

Work experience is one very valuable option and it should be offered to all young people.

Unfortunately this is slowing disappearing as it is no longer a requirement for schools to offer a work experience option.

What a shame as so many employers complain of young people coming to them with no idea of what is required!

“employing youngsters as a 'Saturday job' last year, some were completely clueless its work ethics. Example one said they'd work, but only a few days before their day, I'd find out they'd made other plans to work and obviously hadn't told me!

With regard to 'work experience' now myself, in a job that's very boring and mundane (different to the above work) and got varied other work experience, a good education to degree level, but I apply for better jobs and usually hear nothing!”

“Whilst the need for work experience for the young generation is deemed essential by local employers, NELC,GIFHE, and our local paper will the schools that have opted out of offering this option ( work experience) go on record and tell us why the school or schools have decided to opt out and no longer allow or encourage students to take part in work experience ?”
