GRIMSBY Borough defied the odds to move into the next round of the FA Vase after an outstanding 1-0 victory at Radcliffe Olympic.

Nathan Emson scored a stunning winner to set up a derby clash with Winterton Rangers on September 18.

Borough travelled to Nottingham for the first qualifying round, which was originally the Grimsby side's home game.

But having no ground available at the moment because of problems with the Bradley Community Stadium pitch, the FA granted Borough permission to reverse the tie.

It was something the club did not want to do but they had no other option.

It was a tough encounter after Radcliffe had disposed of Holbeach United and Wisbech Town in the FA Cup in the last two weeks.

Borough kicked off and were immediately pressed by the home team, forcing the Grimsby side to hit wayward long balls.

Hatton and Anderson were getting stuck in to the Borough midfield and the former was lucky to get away with a blatant elbow into the face of Tommi Wright that left the full-back needing attention.

Buckthorp, Oswin and Gaughan eventually got hold of the ball and kept releasing Danny Freeman, who caused centre-backs Haukes and Spence problems with his movement.

The game was fairly even with Radcliffe's Westcarr and Phil Massingham lively up front, but well shackled by Creer and Hanslip.

The game drastically changed on the half-hour mark when Massingham was shown a straight red card for a stamp on Wright as he lay on the ground after both players came together in a tackle.

Borough looked good on the counter attack with Emson causing problems for full-back Miles with his trickery on the ball.

Then, Freeman turned Spence, who handled on the edge of the area. Oswin took the free-kick, which beat Parkes in the Radcliffe goal, only to shave the outside of the post.

The Borough message at half-time was to keep patient and be better in possession and no changes were made by either team.

After an hour, they got their rewards when a good ball out wide to Emson enabled him to run at Miles and get past him into the box, before hitting a rising shot into the net, leaving Parkes beaten at his near post.

The goal settled Borough and their possession was a lot better.

Nathan Ireland was another threat down the right side and he cut in and hit a good left-foot shot just over.

Radcliffe were all at sea, throwing their substitutes on to no effect.

Borough should have made it two after 80 minutes with a lovely move involving Wright and Ireland.

Ireland knocked a good cross into Freeman, who hit a first-time shot straight at Parkes. The rebound fell to Emson with an open goal but somehow he put it past the post.

Borough saw out the final few minutes with no problems and gratefully advanced into the next round with a home tie against Winterton Rangers, although it remains to be seen whether that will be at Bradley.

In their first qualifying round tie, NCEL premier division side Winterton had a home 2-0 win over Long Eaton United.
