End sickening cruelty
IN the 1980s after the EEC, the main market for whitecoat seal pelts, banned their import, and British supermarkets, pressed hard by customers, with Tesco in the lead, refused to sell Canadian fish until the whitecoat hunt ended, over a million harp seals founds peace on the ice in the ensuing years.
It was not to last, however, and Canada, when it judged the world had forgotten about the seals renewed the carnage, targeting pups that had shed their white coat and are called "beaters".
Four to six weeks of age, these are baby seals by any reasonable definition, but not being subject to the EU ban on whitecoat imports their pelts have flooded into Europe.
Thankfully, the EU responded by banning the importation of all seal products this year, thanks to pressure from many animal welfare organisations.
Canada, however, is actively seeking other markets for its pelts and may very well succeed.
As well as suffering untold agony at the hands of the fishermen, these poor harp seals on the ice fields off Canada's east coast now have to contend with the effect of global warming.
This year the ice floes are not forming sufficient mass to provide a base for the seal nurseries and tens of thousands of baby seals will likely die as a result.
Add to this the continued hunting of those that survive and a catastrophe is imminent.
Readers can help end this sickening cruelty by not buying Canadian fish and other Canadian products.

“You ALL are thicker than the volcanic ash that is spewing from Iceland.
Neil is winding you all up (yes, just as I do at times, ask JO. :-) ) and he's doing an excellent job of it to.
At least I have a good chuckle at his post's, that is untill he rabbits on about OE.
Bravo Neil, keep 'em coming.”

“Yes you are playing silly games Neil as you figures are clearly reversed.
Having used Google I have found numerous industry and governmental web sites showing that man-made green house gasses as a proportion of volcanic green house gasses to be between 6.8 and 1.2% (some figures include respiration, some don't).
Still playing silly games Neil?
I guess that's what you get if you simply log on to www.leftwingtreehuggersandhippys/madeupfiguresonglobalwarming.com
Merry Xmas”

“Yup ! The figures on Co2 are about right. I did get the century wrong though. It was the 18th....Still want to play silly games?”

“"I have no real scientific understanding of climate change". Well done. Win a prize. But I know people that do. The same way I know the person who won an international award on fish sustainability. You should try and get out more. You might meet some of them. Not that you would take the slightest piece of notice...”

“Wrangler. You really ought to learn certain things. It is a well known and accepted fact that Volcanoes produce around one percent of Co2 emissions. In a study made in 1991,it was estimated that mankind produced nearly 150 times more. Those figures are "off the top of my head",but are about correct. Try something like "google" on say, climate change and Volcanoes. It should back me up. Hmm ! Might have to check myself though.....”

“Neil,
That sort of comment is exactly why I'm fairly sure you have no idea what you are talking about and have no real scientific understanding of climate change.
Whilst the dust clouds do cause a short term reduction in global temperatures though a process termed 'Global Dimming', much as also in the late 1970, where particulate emissions from industry and diesel engines caused fears of another mini ice age.
Volcano's put out *HUGE* amounts of CO2, Sulphur compounds and water vapour into the atmosphere.
The Iceland volcano is estimated to be putting up to 300,000 tonnes of CO2 every 24 hrs Neil and that not including the Sulphur compounds and water vapour (which is 10 time more of a green house gas than CO2!)
So once the dust settles (if you will excuse the pun Neil), then we will have more CO2 in the atmosphere! QED.
However I feel I should point out that its all relative as all the active Volcano's around the globe already churn out an order of magnitude more green house gasses than all the people and industry globally combined already!”
