LOUTH CC star Arran Brindle managed just six runs as England's women began their tour of New Zealand with a resounding victory in the first Twenty20 international in Wellington.

After winning the toss and electing to field, England restricted their hosts to 80 for nine – spinner Brindle, who was called into action first change, recorded economical figures (0-14) in her four-over spell.

Somerset seamer Anya Shrubsole took an international best of five for 11 in the Sky Sports televised clash that took place in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The tourists made hard work of their reply, however, but surpassed the New Zealand total after 17.4 overs, for the loss of four wickets.

Batting at number five, Brindle was among those to fall in the chase – the former Louth captain, 30, was bowled by Kate Broadmore after a 17-ball stay at the crease.

Her dismissal proved not to matter, though, as wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor steered England to their target with a composed innings of 31 not out. The tourists now travel to Hamilton ahead of the second match of the T20 series which takes place tomorrow.
