Europe's eyes to fall on blossoming seaside at Cleethorpes
CLEETHORPES is on a crest of a wave – which could soon see all of Europe's eyes on the resort.
In the wake of the golden celebrations at the East Midlands In Bloom awards, the Royal Horticultural Society has invited Cleethorpes to be the nation's entry in the European In Bloom competition, Entente Florale.

That could bring a team of 17 judges from all over Europe to Cleethorpes next summer.

It could mean more than 500 delegates from throughout the UK visiting the resort.
As Cleethorpes' In Bloomers keep their hopes high of winning the Champion of Champions award in the national competition presentation in Guernsey next month, they also hope they can persuade all other delegates to have a venue for the 2013 awards which is more central for the UK.
Chairman Bob Callison said he was excited at the chance of hosting the national competition which would coincide with the 150th anniversary of the arrival of trains in the resort.
He is also looking forward to hosting Entente Florale judges from Austria, Italy, Belgium and the Czech Republic.
"They will come from all over and spend about eight hours in Cleethorpes," he said.
"It is a very big challenge, but what more do you have to do to get Cleethorpes on the map after growing from an entry in small local competition to winning a regional competition and winning a national award and hopefully becoming Champion of Champions in Great Britain – and now we are in Europe.
"This means not just Great Britain looking at us but the whole of Europe looking at us.
"Cleethorpes has come on leaps and bounds. I am extremely proud to be a Cleethorpes boy."
He said the anniversary of the historic advent of railway links between Cleethorpes and Yorkshire and Midlands cities would be capped perfectly if the national In Bloom awards were presented in Cleethorpes.
Mr Callison said: "We have been up to Scotland, down to the south coast, been to Coventry and Wales and we are in Guernsey next month.
"It would make sense to have it in Cleethorpes. It would be a central hub and less distance for everyone to travel."
He remained tight-lipped on the venue for the presentations but said there would be no problems accommodating 500 delegates.

“Labourladie,
"...and because of its location miles of golden sands and clear blue seas are not what its about." Then what is it about?
My first ever holiday was at Cleethorpes in the middle 50's, and all you could see then was sand and sea. NO salt marsh ANYWHERE! The beach was just SAND all the way to the sandhills.
This dirty smelly stuff has only come to blot the beach in recent years, and should have been removed when it first appeared.
If any one wants the stuff, then THEY should did it up and have it in their gardens.
I am sure that any European delegation would NOT be very impressed at the sight of a beach covered in the dirty, smelly, unsightly stuff. Not even the council wants it, and have tried to get rid of it, as far as the stupid interfering Natural Heritage or whatever they are called, will allow.
Cleethorpes may not be a Black[pool, Eastbourne, or the Cornish Riviera, but why shouldn't we make it better than what it is?
Yes, a line should be drawn, but NOT AT the Leisure Centre, but maybe 500-700 yards SOUTH of it.”

“Cleethorpes ROCKS!!!!! Now you can stop running down my lovely little town! It's a great little place! It's not Monte Carlo but its not worth a nice day out and is extremely pleasant on a sunny day.I was born there 65 years ago and I am extremely proud of the fact. VIVA! The South Humber Riviera known in Spain as the Costa Del Humber De Sud!!!!!”

“Get rid of the salt marsh jack-knife? You must be having a laugh. This is Cleethorpes, not Blackpool, Eastbourne or the Cornish Riviera. It's a small but pleasant resort situated on the estuary of one of Britains largest rivers and because of its location miles of golden sands and clear blue seas are not what it is about. Instead we have silt laden waters and two fierce daily tides dumping silt and sand on the beach on a regular basis by the ship load, and, guess what? This is what makes salt marsh, and lots of it. Now,if you and others of similar mind, want all this marsh removed then dig deep into your pockets and fund the removal. Don't expect council tax payers to indulge in your fantasies because removal and containment are two different entities. Remove the tufts of marsh grass up where it encroaches on the pier side of the leisure centre to keep the artificial beach in good order is fine but draw the line there, that must be the limit of trying to interfere with natural processes. Strange though isn't it? there always seems to lots of people on the salt marsh, it must be quite interesting.”

“Let's hope they GET RID of the horrible, dirty, smelly salt marsh stuff before they come. I don't think Bob Callison planting a few rose bushes (or a "saucy" post card) in the middle of it will impress anyone! lol
The countries that are not 'landlocked' are used to clean and clear beaches of sand, not like that mess around the Leisure Centre.”
