For England, he played in 34 Test matches, 25 One Day Internationals, seven overseas tours. He scored more than 14,000 runs.

He faced the likes of Michael Holding and Dennis Lillee, and bowled at Viv Richards and Ian Botham.

But although he played with or against some of the greatest players in the game, he says: "I wasn't one of them!"

He continued: "I was a comparatively boring bread and butter cricketer, selected in the team to allow all the brilliant flair players to perform with freedom."

Apart from his cricket prowess, Miller's greatest attribute was his ability to reduce his team-mates to stitches using his dry northern humour – which he now brings to the after-dinner speaking stage.

His hilarious anecdotes stem from wild nights in the West Indies, tales of misadventure in Australia, and rivalries nearer home.

Reg Percival, the event organiser at Caistor Town CC, said: "To secure Geoff is a great coup for the club.

"This is our third annual Sportsman's Dinner and we are confident, given his reputation, that Geoff will be as big a draw as our past speakers were.

"His experience, knowledge and jocular take on cricket and other things makes him a great draw for any lover of humour.

"We are expecting a strong demand for tickets and would recommend people purchase them as early as possible."

Tickets are available, priced at £37 per person, or £345 for a table of ten. The price includes a three-course dinner. The dress code is smart – jacket and tie. To purchase a ticket, contact Reg Percival on 07801 046040 or email reginald.percival@which.net

The event, An Evening with Geoff Miller, is being sponsored by Cherry Valley. The Sportsman's Dinner will raise funds towards Caistor's Junior Cricket Academy, which is sponsored by Paul Wiseman Electrical Contractors.
