Family plan lasting legacy in memory of brave Wayne Sargent
"I'VE told her that daddy is now a star in the sky, but she sends him text messages to heaven every day to say that she loves him."
Those were the heart-breaking words of a young mum from Immingham who has lost the love of her life just six months after tying the knot at an emotional ceremony paid for by a flood of well-wishers.
Wayne Sargent, finally passed away last Tuesday with his mum, wife and sister at his bedside following an exhausting battle against mouth cancer.
As reported, the 32-year-old was married to his partner of five-and-a-half years Cheryl Bridge, 22, at a packed Grimsby Register Office just days after being told he was destined to lose his three-year fight against the disease.
The former forklift truck driver also leaves behind a beautiful four year-old daughter.
Devastated Cheryl described her man as being "a soldier without the ammunition" as she held back the tears to reveal how the brave Liverpool fan insisted on going present shopping for his family just days before he slipped away.
She said: "He was a fighter till the end, we are all so proud of him. Even though he was in a real bad way he made sure that I took him shopping to Ramsdens for toys for Lily-Mae. Even now we are getting parcels delivered that Wayne had bought for me and others in his family.
"I'll take so many happy memories with me, like dancing with him in the Railway Club and the fact that he refused to eat in a restaurant which didn't have HP sauce.
"He had no sense of direction and we would often get lost out on days out, but he was a one in a million and will be badly missed by so Loved ones are now hoping to establish a lasting legacy by encouraging well wishers to donate cash to the Immingham District Nursing team who helped ease his struggle.
Proud mum Sue added: "Wayne never smoked and very rarely drank, he would rather have a pint of milk over a pint of lager. Towards the end he said all he wanted was to be able to go back to work, spend a day playing with Lily-Mae and have a plate of sausage, chips and HP sauce.
"I will always remember his cheeky little face and wonderful nature. His final words were 'tell Lily-Mae I love her' and that just about sums him up."
Family and friends can say a final goodbye to Wayne at a service at Grimsby Crematorium next Thursday from 3pm.
