ANOTHER North East Lincolnshire School has been "fast-tracked" to become a new academy.

From September 1, Healing School will become independent.

As reported, 13 local schools had registered an interest in becoming academies – with six of these being able to fast track their application, as they were judged as "outstanding" by Ofsted.

Tollbar Business and Enterprise College application was one of the first to be rubber-stamped, and now Healing School has followed suit.

It means there is a double celebration for staff and students at the Low Road school, following its record-breaking GCSE results.

Head teacher Ann Addison said: "We are really excited about it, this is an excellent start to the new academic year."

“Very attractive idea for a school like Healing. The quality of education there is good but bear in mind the quality of the intake compared to some other local schools. Whatever Gove says, these independent schools are effectively a political attempt to recreate grammar schools but without the 11+.

The biggest problem is that they are funded by public money but are outside of public control unless a financial disaster occurs. It cannot be be right or fair for some schools to have complete control over curriculum, buildings, staff conditions of service and so on while others do not. It cannot be right either for that control to be exercised by a small group that is not accountable to elected councillors.”

“I do hope that the board of governors of Healing School have the financial experience to handle this when they lose the umbrella of the local council.
Ann Addison is a member of the board of governors at the Grimsby Institute and they have just lost a case against the Learning and Skills Council for a refund of £3.7 million pounds. Teaching is one thing, hard headed business is another. To read the full transcript of the judges summing up go to BAILLII.org (British and Irish Legal Information Institute) it is quite an eye opener.”

“Has your community suffered when the funding was pulled on the planned playground? Has your child's school, promised rebuilding or refurbishment under "Building Schools for the Future" been condemned to another decade of decline in its building stock because the money has been snatched away? This is where the money has gone. To a school already identified as outstanding, taking advantage of Academy legislation rushed through Parliament by Mr Gove using procedures normally intended for terrorism. Are these new academies the return of the Grammar School? Big Society? Fat chance!”
