Film returning to Freeman Street with new monthly screenings
FILM is returning to Grimsby's Freeman Street this month – despite the landmark Odeon Cinema lying dormant.
Bosses at Meniscus Films – the organisers of Grimsby's annual short film competition – are bringing the best of cinema back to the street with the birth of The Meniscus Community Film Society.
The society will host monthly screenings of everything from Hollywood blockbusters to British movies and the best of world cinema at the Skills Centre in Freeman Street Market.
Meniscus secretary Himanshu Ghadiali said: "Meniscus is bringing a film society to the community and we hope everybody will support us by joining and giving themselves opportunities to enjoy world cinema.
"It will give people the chance to see films which are rarely shown at mainstream cinemas. Showings will take place in the newly built Skills Centre in Freeman Street market, bringing regular cinema back to the street for the first time since the demise of the Odeon."
As reported, the last film was shown at the Odeon in 2004. The venue reopened as the Regal Cinema for just one month in 2009 before Shropshire businessman Trevor Harris and his son Anthony were forced to close it again following a string of setbacks.
Meniscus chairman Stuart Hall said: "It will be great to show different kinds of films in the street where my association with film began.
"We hope there will be something for everyone, including Eastern European, Bollywood, and mainstream British and American cinema."
The film club is being supported by The Freemen of Grimsby, Meniscus Films, The Grimsby Institute and North East Lincolnshire Council's arts development team. The club's first screening will be The Coen Brothers classic, Burn After Reading, on Friday, March 18.
