Fine for thief who stole cheese from store
EVERYONE likes a cheese sandwich – but that does not justify stealing the cheese from a shop, a Grimsby magistrate declared.
Brian Walton, 24, of Wroxham Avenue, Grimsby, admitted stealing two packs of cheese from the Co-operative on November 7.
Rachel Smith, mitigating, said Walton had no income at the time and had been without money for 38 days until a new benefit claim was approved.
Presiding magistrate James O’Nions told Walton: “We all like a cheese sandwich.”

“Ultimately the taxpayer coughs up the money.
These sort of crimes should be punished by real community work schemes. How about some unpaid street cleaning or graffiti removal.”

“£125! If the geezers circumstances where as stated, no savings or no one providing meals then that is way out of line. A fine is not going to help is it. Surely some other form of payback should have been considered.”
