THE council will pilot a scheme that will fine people for parking on grass verges in a number of villages in the area.

It will introduce the first three schemes in Waltham, New Waltham and Immingham after residents and parish councils requested the introduction.

If it is successful, the scheme could be rolled out across the borough.

A spokesman for North East Lincolnshire Council said: “We expect that the first three schemes will be in Immingham, Waltham and New Waltham.

Just good luck, I guess. Sometimes though it depends on who's tuned in on the day!

“IS it illegal to park on grass verges? We all know it's a common sight when driving around residential areas! Surely if they start introducing it in these ares then they must set a precedent and have to start enforcing it all over the NE Lincs council area! It cant be one rule for one and one for another surely?!”

Just a question. how is it when you comment you seem to escape the wrath of the phantom ratings man (or fish)?”

    “how_v_dare_u,

The council should have bye laws ready to roll out, but these are (apparently) unenforceable without appropriate signage in place.

To my great surprise, it is NOT illegal to park like a t1t astride both road and footpath, unless there are appropriate bye laws in force and again with signage.

Given the council are unlikely to tackle two problems at once (related to being unable to walk and chew gum at the same time), I guess we'll just have to settle for tolerating these thoughtless types who wear their inconsiderateness as a badge of honour and struggle to squeeze paste while pushing our granddaughter's pram and hopefully not catching the car's paintwork with any carelessly stowed sharp objects or casually held bunches of keys or the like.

    Arthur, Immingham”

"Does anyone know if NELC has the authority to just decide that it will fine people for parking on the respective grass verges?

Whether or not they have the authority is no obstacle. They're going to do what they want anyway. Even if there's no legislation permitting them to enforce this, they will just create some statutory instrument in parliament, or run some existing regulations through the house of commons for amendment, so they can enforce more penalties.

How about when they do make using the word "fascist" a criminal offence when used in the context of local authorities. In the commons, I notice they're already thrashing out the detail for "the Profane or Obscene Language Use (Amendment No3) (fascist) Regulations 2012"”

"if people park within the confines of the road the properties down that street are completely inaccessible by fire engines!"

Then there's an obvious solution ...... we need smaller fire engines”

“When I go through Immingham on my way to work most mornings, there's an Advance Truck van parked across the footpath on Stallingborough Road. It's danagerous for users of the footpath and makes visibility on the road difficult because it's on the brow of a hill. It makes it doubly perilous for cyclists. Thoughtless, fine the company, then they may make it stop.”

A self-proclaimed fool, if ever there was one.

You're condoning illegal and thoughtless parking by claiming the emergency service may need access. These people should either park their cars elsewhere, or buy a house with off-road parking.

    “Immature Arthur:

Terraced streets in this town were built when only a small minority of the population owned cars.

Nowadays, it is absolutely necessary to park partly on the path in these streets, because if people park within the confines of the road the properties down that street are completely inaccessible by fire engines! People living in the middle of the street would burn to death if there was a fire, would that keep you happy?

    Who's the fool eh?”

If it has we'd better watch out cos who knows where it will end. Prohibiting the use of "fascist" may be next and a fine for breaching the ban.”
