A FIREFIGHTERS' calendar has proved a sizzling success, after it was sold around the world to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Crews from Cromwell Road Fire Station, in Grimsby, proved a popular choice for adorning walls in 2013. They posed nude in tasteful shots in aid of Grimsby and Cleethorpes Branch for Motor Neurone Disease Association.

The calendar, which was released in September and sold via the internet, raised £9,000 for the worthy cause.

And it was shipped to happy customers in America, Rome, Germany and even Australia.

The station's clerk, Lisa Blow, is chairman of the local association branch, and said it is the most they have ever raised – especially when taking into account a further £9,000 in donations alone.

"It will help local people with the disease by buying them equipment, helping them with travel costs and holidays," she explained.

"People do not realise how quickly the disease progresses from diagnosis and that is why sufferers need financial support available immediately."

Lisa thanked the support from Paula Denton Associates, Amba Photography, Simons, Rescue Refrigeration, ABP, The Van Company, Asda Grimsby, Tesco Cleethorpes and Grimsby Auditorium.

She said: "We sold the calendars where we could, and the amount we raised from them we wouldn't even get in one year.

"I'm hoping it has made more people aware of the disease."

Firefighter Steve Critten, 48, from Caistor, is Mr May.

He said: "I'm the oldest one in the calendar and I wasn't nervous about getting my clothes off; I have the calendar up at home."

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the upper and lower motor neurones.

There is currently no effective treatment or cure and most patients' life expectancy is between 18 months and five years after diagnosis.

The branch is looking for new members to join the committee. They meet the first Monday of every month at 7pm at St Andrew's Hospice.
