PAST captain Andy Flinn kept his cool on the hottest day of the year to clinch the Seniors Championship at Grimsby Golf Club.

With temperatures nudging the 90s, one hundred over-55s battled for the title.

Flinn took the honours with a gross 76 – a reverse of his 67 years of age.

In his first year of eligibility, Peter Britcliffe shared second place with former winner John Hemingway on 77.

The net champion for the over-60s, and holder of the coveted Curry Cup, is the fast improving Dave Richardson with a fabulous 64, one of the lowest scores this year.

A further two shots back and settling in well to playing at his new club was Eric Paddison.

In the 65-70 year bracket, club director Brian Bell also shot a net 66 to top this division with Tony Bratley second with net 70.

The Veterans' Vase, for those over 70, was won by Tom Sandiford with a net 69 from club chairman Mike Beckett, second on net 70.

Some 43 ladies at Grimsby played a medal competition for the Peggy Sharman Cup (silver) and the Curry Cup (bronze).

The Sharman was won by Jane Peacock, 71 net, followed by Debbie Kerr with 74, and the winner of the Curry Cup, reducing her handicap from 25 to 22, was Elaine Hoggarth, with 67, from Beth Bull, 69.

The ladies at Louth played in the July Medal and Stenigot Trophy medal and competition.

The course was excellent with fast greens and fairways that sometimes favoured a good shot with plenty of "run" but also having to suffer erratic bounces on the hard ground.

Nicky Templeton came first in the medal round, winning the trophy with a net 65, cutting her handicap by four shots.

Second with another excellent round was Anne Brackenbury with net 68, also achieving a handicap cut.

Third with a net 74 was Stephanie Teanby.

Against a backdrop of warm but overcast conditions, Tetney seniors played a Stableford competition.

Winner of division one was Cyril Tilson with 38 points, second Paul Haylock (37) and third Ian Chadwick (36).

Division two could not have been closer when the top three all returned 37 points. After countback Jock Johnstone was first, followed by Dave Bingham and Roly Avison.

Fourteen-year-old Liam Needham won the Doris Cup on countback at Sandilands with an excellent 64.

The Doris Cup is for the best medal score for 18 holes over the two rounds and the Dorothy for the best aggregate score over 36 holes.

Needham edged Dick Kingham into second place, while the teenager's proud Dad John came third with 65.

The Dorothy Cup winner was Mark Storr with rounds of 66 and 70 for a total 136.

Mick Upton came second with two rounds of 69 for 138 and Paul Chambers third with rounds of 69 and 70 for 139.

Three players got two in the first round, Mick Neal, Paul Weston and John Needham. In the second they were achieved by Mick Upton, Ged Lee , Richard Naylor and Dick Kingham with a brilliant two at the par-four 15th.

Some 17 seniors played in a Stableford competition in the cold and rain when the winner with 34 points was Phil Wilde. Joe Sansom was second with 33 and Bill Webb third, 32.
