BUS travellers were jubilant that a bus service to Hull has been saved.

As reported, the Stagecoach X1 service connecting Cleethorpes and Hull has been repeatedly threatened because of low user numbers and an operating cost of £30,000 a year.

Now North East Lincolnshire Council has pledged £10,000 a year for the next three years – giving the Humber Flyer a stay of execution. It was due to be axed next month.

A meeting Hull City Council, Lincolnshire County Council and Humberside Airport will soon take place to find an extra £20,000.

Today, residents heading for Hull hospitals, shops and ferries from Grimsby Bus Station welcomed the news, first reported in yesterday's Grimsby Telegraph.

“Humber Flyer? Isn't it more of a Crawler, going via Keelby and the airport instead of straight down the A180? If you're going on holiday with a load of suitcases, surely you'd fork out for the convenience of a taxi?”

    “Pete

Cleethorpes to Barton is £7.40 return anytime. You can get it cheaper off peak but it is no more than that.

And I do travel by this train service and most of the time the conductor does not even ask me for money although he sees that I have got on at an un-manned station and he is the only person to get the ticket from.

If they want to collect the money I will pay, if they do not collect the money then it is free. You can not get cheaper than that!”

“sh of Fulstow. sorry bud but all i can say is, if people checked services first before moving to isolated area's then you would know what services are available beforhand. And as for Nigel of N Lincs, i don't know when you last used the train service from grimsby to barton but you might find traveling by train is much more expensive than using the X1 bus service alone. last time i used the X1 service it cost me £5.50 return travel, however i do believe the train service from grimsby to barton is around £7 or £8 plus and thats without the bus from barton to hull cost's.”

“If the X1 bus service is removed people can still get to Hull (should they want to). They just have to use the nearly empty train to Barton then get the 350 bus service to Hull.

This is cheaper and at some time quicker too. Just a thought.”

“What narrow minded people you are, so glad i've long since left what was once GREAT Grimbsy.
Mark, if you extend your reasoning, you don't need a train station either as you have no reason to travel anywhere outside GY!
So you wont be needing the planned train link to London.
I know people from Grimsby who HAVE to travel to Hull and Leeds for treatment. I know of people from Scotland who travel to Leeds for treatment; Why?
Beacause as medicine gets more complex it can't be given at any old hospital, it has to be done by specialist.
Given that GY hospital often struggles with simple broken bones, i for one would welcome travelling for treatment.”
