DID you do a double take when you saw Mr Blobby and a host of strange characters walking down Freeman Street yesterday?

Do not fear, you are not losing your marbles.

They were actually a handful of over a hundred people who took advantage of an unexpected give-away – after thousands of fancy dress outfits were thrown into a skip.

Crowds gathered round a large blue skip outside Harlequins fancy dress shop – which is closing down – as owners threw away thousands of crazy outfits.

Some of the characters spotted in Freeman Street as the skip is raided.

Those grabbing the freebie costumes were in high spirits, as they donned the outfits and paraded up and down the street.

However, it was a different story for shop owners Roger Ladson, his wife Carol and their son Chris, who took over the shop four years ago – but yesterday became the latest victims of the recession.

For more on this story, see today's Grimsby Telegraph.

Mr Blobby is seen in Freeman Street, Grimsby.

“Maybe Austin should have been there - the clothes look better than the ones he was wearing on TV on Monday evening ! He could use them to go incognito for the upcoming election.”

“If the owners are going out of business then I would assume that is down to the similar genius business initiatives that include putting all your remaining stock and potential for recouping losses into a skip.”

“My thoughts exactly Me and kt. Giving the items to drama groups/ College departments or perhaps other fancy dress shops still operational would have been a great gesture. Makes you wonder if it was a publicity stunt?”

“The owners threw outfits out onto a skip... they could have done so much more with them, what a waste!”
