LIFE-LONG friends will complete a gruelling 160-mile bike ride in memory of a Humberston schoolgirl.

Roy McPhee, the father of Laura, who passed away aged nine following an asthma attack, will pedal from Morecombe Bay to Bradley Community Stadium, Grimsby, with his school pal Simon Sharp.

They are currently in training – covering at least 150 miles a week – and hope to complete the ride through Clitheroe, Harrogate, to the Humber Bridge in just 14 hours.

Keen cyclist Roy, 45, who is part of the Lindsey Roads Cycling Club, established the Laura McPhee Memorial Fund with wife Trace and son Lewis following Laura's death in December 2010.

So far, the fund has raised thousands of pounds for poorly children in the area, and other worthy causes.

He said: "Last year, I rode from Blackpool to Grimsby with my pal Mark Stevens over two days, but with this ride I want to complete it in one day.

"I'm hoping there will be a good back wind to push us through and I'm going to navigate my way through the names of towns and hope for the best!

"I hope to raise as much money as possible for my daughter's charity and my good friend Simon will keep me going for sure.

"We are going to stop off for 20-minute breaks in certain towns to refresh with water and energy bars kindly supplied by Cycle Mode, in Scartho.

"I'm really looking forward to it and I hope it will go to plan. Cycling definitely keeps you in shape and fit."

The pair will set off at midnight from Morecombe and hopefully arrive in Grimsby by 2pm on Saturday, September 29.

Cycling fanatic Simon, 45, who lives on the Willows Estate in Grimsby, said: "I'm hoping the weather will be good and that there is no head wind.

"I knew Laura well and I'm proud to be raising money for her charity.

"Roy and I have been friends since we meet at Humberston School, and our children went to school together.

"We will be riding road race bikes and carrying spare inner tubes just in case of punctures. I will also have lots of bananas and energy bars to keep us going.

"I enjoy cycling and ride about 150 miles a week."

Andy Jones, store manager of Cycle Mode in Scartho, will supply the friends and check their bikes are in full working order.

He added: "I will prepare the bikes for a long ride and give them the best opportunity to have a smooth one.

"Suppling nutrition bars is important to keep their muscles going and hydrated.

"I will do anything I can to help charities such as this one and it is such a worthy cause."
