A FUNDRAISING effort has been launched to mount a £3,000 granite globe at Cleethorpes' Meridian Line.

Cleethorpes Renaissance Town Team is appealing to each Cleethorpes ward and local businesses to contribute £300 to the monument.

  1. New monument: An example of the granite globe to be used on the Meridian Line.

And Councillor Keith Brookes and Margaret Cracknell (Cons, Haverstoe) are among the first to help out.

As reported, the globe, weighing a tonne and measuring a metre wide, will mark the Meridian Line through Cleethorpes – the only UK seaside town it passes through.

Town Team's Peter Kingsford said: "Like everyone, we have very little money, but this is to enhance the whole of Cleethorpes.

"We had the idea of asking our respective Cleethorpes wards to help us out by contributing 10 per cent. We are looking for any form of sponsorship."

The Town Team and an unknown donator have also chipped into the fund.

“We have enough stones in Cleethorpes these days as it is. I also worry that the Labour led council will get rid of the globe in a few weeks like they did with the bulbs near the kiosk”

“Would it not have been an idea to have asked "Local Businesses" to make a contribution towards
the flower beds that NELC have ripped up, they could have put up a small board to say the name of the firm that had made a donation towards the up keep of the flowe beds.
But then again NELC "Bull in a China shop" would look to the easy option.
