AS four local parks were today awarded a Green Flag, there was bad news for one of them and 10 others as the axe fell on funding for new play areas in the borough.

Government cuts mean the Playbuilder scheme - which has already seen the well-received revamp of 11 local play areas - has been axed.

And while council chiefs have vowed to do all they can to find funds from elsewhere for the remaining 11 parks - including Grimsby's People's Park, which has today received Green Flag status.

Find out which parks are affected, and read reaction in today's Grimsby Telegraph.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg. The cuts which the Council are going to have to make will hurt many more people, chiefly the poor and the vulnerable. Already Michael Gove has snatched back all unspent money from the "Building Schools for the Future" progamme, intended to remedy decades of under-investment in school buildings. I guess all schools would love to look as state-of-the-art as the Oasis, Wintringham. According to Mr Gove the projects were pulled because there was no money. Bizarrely, this week, the Academies Bill was rushed through Parliament using procedures envisaged for anti-terror legislation. This will give money and increased opportunity to the best performing schools, denying resources to struggling schools in deprived areas. Just watch the news!”

“I am glad that the play park is not going back on the Spinney, as it was troubles there, night after night till 3 in the morning most nights with druggies and kids under age drinking.

The last four years has been bliss to be honest, since they took it down. the slide was removed as some erk super glued razor blades to it, the swings were painted with paint remover and a young kid got terrible burns from it, constant burning of the rubber matting and the wooden posts? Daily visit from the Council staff in the mornings picking up needles and broken glass. Need I say more?

Just a normal day in good old Grimsby then?
I'm lucky enough to have a park with all the built in play stuff about 2 minutes walk from me. Its sat right next to TWO full size footy pitches complete with goals and nets. Now how come in 'Big Bad Ole US of A' with all its nutters and gun crime can this happen?
    Is it because
A: The kids have plenty of constructive things to do and
B: They have respect for other peoples stuff cos if they don't - well the results are not pleasant.”

“This is the tip of the iceberg! Over the next few months you will see not only playparks but also services for the poor and vulnerable affected or totally withdrawn. Schools in need of rebuild or refurbishment have lost money promised to them under the "Building Schools for the Future" programme. Why? There's no money we're told. So how has money been found for the Academies programme, rushed through Parliament in a week, which favours schools already doing outstanding work. To misquote Luke 1.53, Mr Gove "has filled the rich with good things and sent away the poor."”

“Ever tried to save an "electric eel"? Me? Yup ! Did I know it was that type? No. It was not impressed with my efforts, and "zapped" me. Ingrate. I like our local parks. I like the local area. Personally,it looks wonderfull at the moment. Well done everyone.Just a personal view.......”

“You forgot at least two things I remember about picnics on the beach,Ronald. The extra sand that somehow managed to invade every sarnie was also free. My parents were pleased. It took me much longer to eat one. The other is the "one on ones" with my father, who usually worked away when I was young. He started to teach me about nature, including why a small crab bit me while I was trying to save it from a small pond. Did I learn? Er....Not exactly......”

“What is wrong with people today, they want everything provided on their doorsteps, and all at the taxpayers expence. We had none of the resources that are available today. Peoples park or Bradley woods were the places we went to, a walk with our parents, sandwiches and a bottle of lemonade, a football maybe or even a bat & ball. We made our own entertainment and enjoyed it. Then there is Cleethorpes with its long clean beach paddling pool and sandpit al free.
Lets get the country back in credit before we start moaning about cuts which have to be made in services for entertainment.”

“Good as it would have been a complete waste of money. How many children's playgrounds have been built in Grimsby over the years and where are they all now? And why? Because they were vandalised by night and filled with unsupervised bullies during the day - they are never accessible for decent children who actually want to play and enjoy themselves.

We need to look at what makes the ones that do 'work' work... such as the one in the sandpit at the Boating Lake - that one's a pleasure to go to and I think largely because the kids there are usually supervised by their parents.

Local play areas are rarely supervised, it's too easy for parents to just send the kids off to play/terrorise other kids/destroy the place and as long as they are not under their feet they couldn't care less.”

“You don't need new parks. Just put some broken glass/dog doo/wood/plastic/and a bit of wood covered in graffiti and there you are.”
