Future of Grimsby to Hull flyer uncertain
THE future of the Humber Flyer bus service is still uncertain – despite councillors pledging that funding "is there if it's needed".
North East Lincolnshire Council has said it will "do all it can" to continue subsidising the Humber Flyer bus service, even though it is yet to pay its contribution for this year.
The X1 route, which connects Grimsby and Cleethorpes to the North Bank via the Humber Bridge, is again under threat following reports mileage and bridge tolls are costing operator Stagecoach too much.
The firm has warned unless local authorities continue to subsidise the service, which runs Monday to Saturday, it may be withdrawn.
Today we are asking you to tell us if you use the service – and what you think should happen to it.
North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC), North Lincolnshire Council, Hull City Council and Humberside Airport have contributed cash to operate it for the last two years, but it is understood disagreements have led to delays in payments being made.
NELC's contribution to the deal has been £10,000 a year.
At a meeting of the full council, a motion was passed for NELC to commit to its share of the subsidy for a further three years.

“My daughter was thrown off the Humber flyer tonight for being sick. It was pitch black & the driver dumped her on the laceby bypass. It's freezing cold & she had no money to get another bus home. I hope this dispical excuse for a human being feels ill one day & gets dumped by the side of a dual carriage way. Horrible man!”

“Yet again we are having the threat of Stagecoach withdrawing the Humber Flyer due to costs they say.I travel on the service usually once a week and the bus is well used and not just by us over 60's.If they persist with this threat I trust they will also cancel the Scunthorpe Fast cat service which incidently runs every 30mins AND has decent ( new in fact ) buses..Are NELC so short sighted that they cannot see not only is this service outgoing from Grimsby Cleethorpes but also brings in people to our towns..Not only is this service used by people visiting Hull for shopping etc but also a vital service for people having to attend hospital appointments in Hull as there is no other means of getting to Hull.So come NELC and Stagecoach get your heads together and sort it out once and for all..

“No one is thinking its a cheap operation to run a bus, but simple maths says that people prefer cheap. and therefore reducing rather than increasing would, in my opinion, work better because people would see it as a reasonable day out, be cheaper for appointments, and open opportunities for other jobs. If you read Dave Sandersons post properly, you'll see he isnt saying he will set it up on a whim. If Stagecoach can do it, so can someone else, perhaps someone with more customer focus rather than money. Its a required service. Why should the council cover everything?”

“I wonder if David Sanderson has any idea how much it would cost to run a regular service to Hull.
Bridge Tolls amount to £20+ per return trip. Diesel is not cheap as the buses only do about 6 miles per gallon. The round trip must be about 80 miles, so thats 13 gallons of fuel per trip.Drivers wages would be another £20 per round trip. This amounts to approx £100 per round trip before you think about buying several buses to operate the service. and all the other running costs.
No wonder Stagecoach need help to run it. I would bet the number of free rides taken by pass holders is about the same as the paying passengers. Therefore the revenue would fall well short of breaking even.
I think that we all need to realise that we cannot have something for nothing. I think the fares shoud be increased to reflect the importance of the link.
Come on North East Lincs Council get your hand in your pocket and support this much needed service.”

“i think its a desrace that the money has to come from the council in the first place when stagecoach run busses in about 75% of the country espesially in london when they proberly charge treble the fair to get from bradley 2 cleethorps. and they will be sopping patiets who dont have accsses 2 a car t get to there vital hospital opointments. the hospital wont substdise you to get there unless u carnt walk . at least ull get a lift back.”

“It all comes down to money!! I too would support another company, private or otherwise to take over this service, it's a vital route and so many people rely on it. Make the fairs 10p or so dearer per person. Come on Stagecoach, surely someone with half a brain can come up with something! Listen to the people who use the bus service, they've got great ideas!”

“Council should run this as a not for profit bus service.
All Stagecoach want is a big subsidy so they can make a profit on the service.”
