"We had a good year and we have been selling a lot before Christmas."

Ramsdens stores sales are up by five per cent from last year and reduced DIY items are one of their best-sellers.

David Christy, managing director, said: "The sale is going really well and we have lots of bargains from sofas, beds, toys and electrical goods.

"DIY and wallpaper items are selling well so far and we have 60 per cent off selected sofas and beds.

"There are some massive savings to be had and we are really pleased with how it is going. I think it's because people love to grab a bargain after Christmas and every little discount helps."
