Grimsby and Cleethorpes scoop In Bloom gold awards - view on video
LIFE is rosy in Grimsby and Cleethorpes today - as it is revealed both towns have come top in East Midlands In Bloom.
Grimsby has topped the Small City category after entering for the first time, ahead of last year's winner, Mansfield, and Cleethorpes has once again been crowned winner of the Coastal Resort section of the regional competition.
-

Both Grimsby and Cleethorpes are today celebrating scooping top In Bloom prizes.

The Grimsby In Bloom committee celebrate winning gold in the East Midlands In Bloom small city category.
As the sun shines on North East Lincolnshire this afternoon, corks are popping to mark this massive success.
The news, which was officially announced at noon at the regional In Bloom awards hosted for the first time in Cleethorpes, is the reward for months of hard work from the In Bloom teams, its partners and residents.
And why not get involved in the celebrations yourself?
Tell us what you love about our towns by posting a comment on the bottom of this story or send us a photograph to pictures@grimsbytelegraph.co.uk
Tomorrow's Grimsby Telegraph will be a celebration of all things In Bloom - make sure you get a copy to see why we should be proud of where we live.

“Gary, if I ever see litter problems I send an email to the council and they usually sort it within 48 hours of me emailing. I have no involvement in this project and no direct interest, but I am delighted the hard work has paid off for those involved. This area needs people putting effort into making it a nice place to live, and I am proud to live in an area where such people make great efforts. Those sniping - read the Shoreline story where I have also commented, be careful you are not one of the whingers for which nothing is ever right, it is your comments that drag this town down. If the positive people outnumber the whiners, for which nothing will ever be right (you'd be wrong for planting flowers, you'd be wrong if you didn't plant flowers), the whiners will soon be in the minority. Together, positive attitudes will regain this town and make it great again. Negativity breeds negativity and nothing good will come of it - please join me in recognising good work, well done.”

“It is not just the council who have worked hard to gain this prestigious award but also many businesses and individuals. Everyone can be proud of this achievment and it will surely help to attract enterprise and tourism in to the area i.e, jobs and cash. hopefully the council will put these awards on signs at the entrances to the towns. Oh by the way it has also brightened up the lives of many locals each time they pass a roundabout or other display.”

“We're not from around here and when friends and family come to visit they love Clethorpes and often say they didn't realise how nice it was - and they keep coming back! IT IS good for the area. As for the litter in the gutter - maybe if less people dropped it (or threw it out of their car windows - cig tabs) then th egutters wouldn't be clogged. And I often see street cleaners! Mostly smiling!”

“The seafront today looked immaculate - no litter at all. I didn't see a street cleaner but they are obviously around because of the cleanliness. Maybe your street doesn't get cleaned as much as tourist areas Gary but I've been known to pick up the odd bit of litter on my street myself and throw it in a bin - do you just look at litter, step over it and then go home to whinge about the council not picking it up? It makes me angry when people criticise the council about litter. The attitude is that it's ok to drop it because someone from the council should come to pick it up. People live in dirty areas because dirty people throw their rubbish down. So no, I don't agree that the flower money would have been better spent on litter sweeping - spend more money fining the people who throw the litter in the first place, not more on cleaning it up.”

“Criticism where criticism is due. Yes we might have lots of flowers to encourage people to come here but surely it'd be better to spend the money on cleaning the gutters of litter. Litter causes disease and rats, flowers don't clean the litter up. When did you last see a street cleaner?”

“Congratulations to everyone involved. To those who are moaning about this - how short sighted are you exactly? We are a coastal area - we rely heavily on tourism and the money visitors spend helps to keep our economy alive. That means it is necessary to invest in making the area look attractive and the towns' involvement in the In Bloom scheme gives national recognition. Look past the end of your noses at the positive response this will have for tourism. People who vist will want to come back. Stop finding new ways to criticise. Investing to encourage tourism and put our resort on the map is money well spent in my opinion, and I also get the benefit of having a lovely looking area to live into the bargain. Again, well done to all involved.”

“So, with the exception of warrior and webbit, am I to take it that all of you commenting are actually involved in this and are just giving yourselves pats on the back?
Amazing how the council can find money for this while discussing all the cutbacks...”
