The move was due to “financial difficulties”.

Mr Smith said: “The shop remains open for business until we find out what is going to happen.

“The shop is well loved by the public.

“We have been here eight years and many of the customers are devastated we are going.”

The manager, who has worked for the company for three years, added: “Hopefully, we can get a buyer and carry on.

“We are keeping our fingers crossed.

“But, as it is, we have lost our jobs.

“It is going to be very hard to find another job.

“We have had customers upset not knowing where they are going to get their stuff.”

The firm also has outlets in Scunthorpe and Lincoln.

A spokesman for the company was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.

“I dont think the staff knew it was closing, they all seem pretty nice and down to earth. When I've been in and asked they said no but they thought it was heading that way, so maybe they could tell but I don't think they knew, staff are usually the last to know lets be honest! Their signs never said closing down before, it's always been clearout or something along those lines, but if you read it wrong I guess that's your fault.. oh well. Sad to see it go, I get all my bedding and curtains from there!! Great shop, great staff.. very sad..”

“"Soon all we'll be left with is charity and pay day loan shops." - Have you also noticed the disturbing amount of betting shops there are nowadays? Not to mention the stupid amount of cafes, sandwich bars, tattoo parlours and and ladies vanity salons - nails, botox, hair... you know the sort - an absurdly high amount of those keep popping up.

It's very depressing walking down Victoria Street or Freemo, remembering what USED to be there. The sight of the Rayners stores shuttered up is sad since they seem to have been there since year dot... and now they're history. And don't get me started on the markets - when you have second hand stalls coming and going from them, you know something is seriously wrong.

So where are the jobs coming from then? Or is "being in it together" all about everybody being made unemployed?”

“OMG not another shop, we have lost HMV, Blockbusters, Comet, and more in the last few months. I shop on the internet but i prefer to buy from the shop.
Its such a sad waste and I feel for the staff, as when i asked them if they were shutting down, they said they didnt think so and didnt know.
It seems the managers have told them to keep quiet or they really didnt know. Whats worse is more people are out of work, aand there isn't any jobs going anywere !”

“How sad. I hope it works out for all the staff affected. Unfortunately it's not surprising. Last year 20 shops PER DAY closed (and that's just amongst the larger retailers). Soon all we'll be left with is charity and pay day loan shops.”
