GRIMSBY Town co-manager Paul Hurst hopes to double the size of the squad before the start of the 2012/13 season on August 11.

Director John Fenty revealed yesterday that both Hurst and Rob Scott are aiming for a professional group of 22 for next season's assault on promotion.

With eight players exiting since the end of the season and Serge Makofo told he isn't in the bosses' plans, there are currently 11 in the first-team squad.

It means a busy summer of recruitment ahead for the dual managers, but Hurst remains positive they can get the numbers in they need – albeit, it may take time.

Hurst said: "When we spoke with John Fenty. we talked about trying to get a squad of around 22 if we could.

"It's a number we would like because, as I've said before, the teams up challenging this season had bigger squads than us. Some might say it's too big, but I think it's about right when you consider the possibility of one or two injuries in the season and possible suspensions.

"We have never been frightened to use a squad and freshen things up and it is good to have that option.

"Naturally, it all depends on who is available.

"If the right people are available at the right wage level then we would like to have a squad of 22 at least.

"It may be that we don't get it done as quickly but can recruit more as we go into the season if necessary."

Hurst confirmed Mr Fenty's declaration that preliminary talks have taken place with some targets but wouldn't expand on their identity or how far advanced those talks had gone.

But he did admit they are players who are likely to be in demand this close season and that the Mariners may have to play a waiting game.

He added: "We have spoken to a few targets we have identified initially.

"But they will have other clubs interested and we will have to be patient before we get an answer.

"We know some will consider location and personal circumstances as well as the footballing aspect.

"But I think this club can sell itself well and we are hopeful we can get the players we want here in a variety of positions in the coming weeks and months.

"From our point of view, we don't only want players with ability but ones with the right attitude in training as well as in games."

The 12 players under contract for next season are: Frankie Artus, Ian Miller, Craig Disley, Shaun Pearson, Louie Soares, Dayle Southwell, Anthony Elding, Bradley Wood, Liam Hearn, Andi Thanoj, James McKeown and Serge Makofo.

“Please, please, please guys bring in quality NOT quantity. I'd prefer to see a smaller squad than 22 if It meant bringing in "quality" players instead and paying them a little more.”
