Grimsby Town: 'Let's start to reel in rivals' - Scott

GRIMSBY Town joint manager Rob Scott is relishing tomorrow's top-of-the-table clash with York City.

Town go into the first of back-to-back matches against sides above them in the play-off race with a trip to Southport up next a week today.

It's a chance to take points off their rivals and extend their 13-game unbeaten league run – but Scott isn't over-emphasising its importance.

He says the team go into the York clash full of confidence after progressing to the FA Trophy quarter-finals at Bath on Tuesday.

But he doesn't believe, with 14 games still to play after this weekend, that it will be decisive.

Scott, who will again be forced to watch on from the stands, said: "It's now come to the point where we are playing teams about us in the table and above us.

"If we do take points off them then we start reeling them in.

"We just want to keep winning games.

"I know it's a cliché but you do just focus on each game when you step over that line to become a manager.

"Fans may be building the York game up as a 'make or break' match but I don't see it as that.

"I see it as three points that will be vital for us to reel them in but by no means would it be the end of our season if we weren't to pick it up.

"That said, we feel confident enough we can win.

"It's another thing to tick off if we can beat what were one of the title contenders when the season began.

"To get the game on in midweek was a big bonus.

"It was good to get that match done and dusted.

"A lot of other teams had their games called off because of the weather and they have to fit in another game.

"We got ours played and it was good to blow the cobwebs away a bit after training has been restricted in the icy conditions.

"We didn't play particularly well and the players, by their own admission, agreed with that.

"Yet we have come out of it with a win and that's pleasing going into a big game like this."

While Town got their rearranged Trophy tie on at the second attempt, York saw their meeting with Ebbsfleet – the winners facing Town next – postponed again.

And with no game in two weeks, Scott hopes they will be as rusty as Town looked at Bath.

He knows after defeat at Bootham Crescent earlier this season, the Mariners are in for a tough day.

But he feels the team, unbeaten in 2012, will also be a tough proposition for York.

The co-manager went on: "I think it's two weeks since York's last game.

"It could work either way.

"They could be raring to go or they may be a little rusty like we were in midweek.

"By all accounts the weather in those parts has been even worse than here for snow.

"I'm sure Gary Mills will have had them working hard, though.

"They are a good side and we saw that when we played them at their place.

"We were outplayed in the first half and then came back into it in the second before losing out to a late winner.

"I think we've come on massively from that game. not only in personnel but in confidence and the way we have been playing.

"They will be a tough proposition but we are a different animal from when we played at their place."

“Lordscartho, Soares has scored 16 goals this season for struggling Hayes. Why wouldn't we use him for the remainder of this season? It should ensure a top five, top four or even top three finish. Top three would be great, as the play-off second leg would be at BP.”

Is it me or is this slightly wrong. I didnt realise that we were anywhere near the top of the table.”
