Grimsby Town: Liam Hearn ready to start season in style
MARINERS star Liam Hearn is eager to get the new season underway – and put what he learnt during an eye-opening first campaign into good use.
Last season's top scorer and Player of the Year, says that he "learnt a lot" in his first campaign in the Blue Square Bet Premier following his summer move to Grimsby Town from Alfreton.
And, while the Nottingham-born frontman is enjoying the end-of-season break, he admits his thoughts are already turning to the start of the 2012/13 campaign in August.
The 26-year-old said: "Even though I think we could have probably gone a bit further last season, last year was all about building – this year, is all about pushing on and going for promotion and I'm looking forward to getting started.
"Last season, you could say that I was a bit uneducated in terms of full-time football, but I feel as though I've got a better understanding now.
"I knew it would take me a while to feel my way in, but, looking forward to next season, I now feel that I know what the league is all about."
Hearn reserved special praise for bosses Rob Scott and Paul Hurst who he credits with sharpening his forward play and helping him to a haul of 29 goals in all competitions last season.
Among these were a trio of hat-tricks, against Barrow, Stockport and Bath, and four goals in Town's 5-2 win at home to Alfreton in October. It was this form that saw him scoop six awards at the club's annual presentation bash in April.
Hearn added: "The managers have been brilliant with me since I joined and have worked a lot with me on the technical side of the game and my movement in and around the box, which I appreciate and feel that I've benefited from.
"Put it like this, I've scored more tap-ins here than anywhere else in my career and I think that is down to the work I'm doing.
"I've also learnt a lot about fitness and conditioning throughout the season – I've never worked on it so much before I came here.
"Hopefully I can use everything I've learned, get off to a good start and do well. I've been talking to a few fans and they are really looking forward to the new season and, as players, we are exactly the same."
