MIDFIELDER Craig Disley said the Grimsby Town squad is "quietly confident" for the forthcoming campaign amid a return to pre-season training.

The players were brought together for a full-day training session at Cheapside and Disley, who was made on-field captain last season, said it had been a tough but worthwhile preparation for what he hopes will be a successful season.

Disley said: "No matter how much work you do in the summer break, it is hard to prepare yourself for the shock of the first day back. It has been tough but it is under our belt now and we're ready to kick on – we're all looking forward to it.

"Having a good preseason is a massive part of going on to have a good season.

"Personally, I've come back in pretty good shape but it will still take me two weeks to get properly fit again. Everyone needs that base level of fitness; otherwise you're going to be struggling in games during the season.

"It is an important time for the squad, we've got to time it right and get the level of work right so we're ready for the new season."

Amid improving expectations from fans, the former Bristol Rovers man added that belief amongst what he described as a strong squad remains high.

He said: "We're all very positive ahead of the season, We've got a very strong base to the squad with some very good players. Everyone is optimistic; we're not going to be spouting our mouths off saying that we're going to win the league, but we're quietly confident in the camp – we believe we can achieve."
