GRIMSBY Town super-sub Rob Duffy made it two goals from two appearances from the bench to send the Mariners through to the FA Trophy quarter-finals on Tuesday – but a starting place is what he craves for his 50th Town outing.

While the Welshman is happy to contribute in any way possible, like every player at Blundell Park he wants to start more games.

And with any run-out against York City this weekend notching a half-century for the Mariners, it would be the perfect way to mark it with a place in the side from kick-off.

The man who looked to be out of the exit door last summer has now made 32 appearances this season, though 17 have come from the bench.

He is still joint-third in the scoring charts with nine goals but the last five have come from the bench.

All he can do is keep doing his bit and hope he can earn a starting place.

For now, he is pleased to be playing his part in the impressive run of results that has seen Town lose just once – and that was in extra-time against Salisbury City – in 21 games.

Duffy said: "It was an important goal for us as a team and another for me which is always pleasing.

"We are an honest dressing room and the performance at Bath was below our normal standards.

"But, as everyone says, it's the sign of a good team when you don't play particularly well and get a win.

"To get an away win in that situation is even better.

"Progression to the next round is all that matters in cup ties.

"We wanted to avoid a replay and another game on Tuesday and we managed to do that.

"We now wait to see who gets through to play us in the next round.

"It was a good cross from Frankie and Elds got a nick on it at the last minute with the centre-back about to clear it.

"The nick took him out of it. The first thing Elds said was how good a header it was from him to set it up so he'll be claiming an assist for that.

"I took a touch on my chest and hit it in with my left and it was nice to see it go in.

"Of course, I'd like to be starting like anyone but if I'm doing a job from the bench then I'm contributing."

Duffy's match-winner also had extra significance after he conceded a penalty in the league meeting at Twerton Park in November that allowed Bath to fight back from two goals down to earn a draw.

He added: "You could say it exorcised a bit of a demon for me at Bath.

"It was a bad misjudgement from me and it gave them a lifeline to press on and get an equaliser. But thankfully, this time, we got the win which took us through."

Joint boss Paul Hurst also praised Duffy's impact on Tuesday and added: "It's a nice habit he's in, coming on and scoring.

"I'm sure he would rather start and we can understand that, but he is a key member of the squad and keeps coming up with the goods."

“Perhaps the managers' should consider starting with Duffy.in place of Hearn who has never looked as dangerous.against the top sides .”
