AT 1pm on Saturday, Grimsby stood still for two minutes to remember fallen heroes Guardsman Jimmy Major and Sgt Matthew Telford as their bodies were driven through the town centre, pausing outside the Town Hall for a salute.

Thousands of people turned out to pay their respects, and shoppers in Freshney Place and Tesco also stopped to remember the two soldiers, shot dead by a rogue Afghan policeman earlier this month along with three others.

See today's Grimsby Telegraph for comments from family, friends, and those just simply wanted to be there to show they care, and more pictures from the emotional event.

POIGNANT: Crowds line the streets as the coffins of the two soldiers stop at Grimsby Town Hall.

“I went to Town Hall Square on Saturday to pay my respects to the two Heros being saluted for their bravery, I must say it was very poignant to be there and I was proud of the people of Grimsby and surrounding areas who turned out to show the families of Matthew and Jimmy how much their two sons are respected. God Bless to all the family and friends.”

“I went along on saturday with my youngest son to watch the hereoes of grimsby come back, it was amazing to see apart from the driver of a car who drove quite fast round the corner opposite the town hall and narrowly missed my son and a young girl who were waiting for jimmy and matty to arrive, they got a hereoes welcome that they truely deserved. Thinking of all the soldiers currently serving out there at this present time including my son, all look after yourselves and come home safe to your families and friends. Once again heart felt sympathies to the families of matty and jimmy, very much hereoes. God Bless x”

“Freshney place customers should be rightly proud of their minutes silence. every single person in the place fell silent except for one stupid woman on a mobile phone. oblivious at first , until told then wandered off still waffling about her inane life. The exception that proves that the majority of Grimsby's citizens including the young " so called chav element" can behave impeccably when required.”

“I went to this and paid my respects and was fortunate enough to stand right at the front so I had a great view of all the people who came to pay their respects! The atmosphere was the most emotional I have ever seen and to see the young and the old turn up to sallute the fallen heroes was incredible! I could not help but shed tears for the boys, and also for every other single soldier still out there! It was a fantastic turn out and I truly hope that the amount of people that turned up brought a small amount of pleasure to the boys families at this horrible time! GOD BLESS THEM BOTH xxx”

“We returned home after witnessing one of the most moving events of our lives. The people of this great town should be justifiably proud of themselves in showing ultimate respect to these two brave young heros - well done Grimsby!

Unfortunately, this does not include the foul mouthed taxi driver in the beige Ford who remonstrated with the police officers outside St James' Church because HE was going to have to waste fuel driving around for FIVE minutes rather than get back on to the rank. Shame on you - you should be bl***y ashamed of yourself. A big thank you to the two police officers who dealt with this worthless item, and to the elderly gent who shouted for respect from this so-called 'man'.”
