AFTER the Chancellor's Autumn Statement, and the prospect of austerity through to 2018 it would be easy to get downhearted as we head towards Christmas.

International trade, however, remains a bright spot for us in the Humber. Our Quarterly Economic survey has found that export sales and orders have improved dramatically.

Anecdotal evidence we have received from the exporters in Grimsby, Hull and the surrounds, who use our services would bear this out, with many reporting increased trading activity in new overseas markets and territories.

It helps that the Humber is the UK's busiest trading route by sea to world markets but this leadership position cannot be taken for granted.

We saw this recently with the proposed EU introduction of a 0.1 per cent low sulphur fuel duty specifically covering the North Sea from 2015 which could have a very serious impact on local shipping activity in this part of the world.

We are therefore asking MPs and Ministers to look again and lobby strongly for UK dispensations against this EU Directive which will do much damage to our local shipping industry if not corrected or offset by 2015. In fact transport and energy remain key issues for the Chamber. Following our lobbying in partnership with the south bank MPs in particular, the reduction in Humber Bridge Tolls has been widely welcomed by the Humber business community.

We are also working closely with our Grimsby and Cleethorpes MPs to gain a through train service, connecting Northern Lincolnshire directly with London to help stimulate economic growth.

And just to prove 'Great Grimsby' can still lead the way and not just as the leading town in the UK currently supplying Renewables, it was fantastic to see, at the recent British Chambers of Commerce Awards in London, two Grimsby companies – Freshney Place Shopping Centre and Ramsden International – come out on top nationally.

As Elton John sang in his 1974 classic 'My Grimsby', we still have a 'magical charm'.
