Tom Naylor's own goal was enough to give Cambridge a 1-0 victory at faltering Grimsby.

The hosts came into the game following back-to-back defeats, but went close to opening the scoring when Shaun Pearson glanced Jamie Devitt's 18th-minute corner inches wide of the far post.

It was at the other end where the breakthrough was made when Naylor headed Harrison Dunk's curling free-kick into his own net to give the U's the advantage after 27 minutes.

Marcus Marshall almost levelled the scores five minutes later but his right-footed strike from the edge of the area flashed wide.

Naylor had the chance to make amends for his error in the 57th minute when he raced through on goal, but chipped wide of the post with Nick Pope stranded.

Dunk tested James McKeown in the closing stages as Richard Money's side held on to their precious lead with relative ease to earn their first victory against the Mariners in 20 years.

“Midsmariner, Hurst strikes me as the reasonable sensible half of the partnership. Look back to Scott's rant in Setember 2011to the fans in the pontoon, ranting about more money. Well he has had his boardroom support and the permanent additions have had their chance.
Apart from the cruel injury to Liam Hearn denying him a chance to shine again this season their signings have failed to convince.
It is clear to anyone that the loss of Pond and Nielsen weakened the team and the introduction of Brodie Lewis and Marshall has added nothing.
All is not yet lost, three good performances in the play offs would see us promoted but an honest assessment is that this group of players is not good enough to survive in the football league, therefore a whole new squad would have to be assembled.
I really feel for John Fenty, his management teams poor judgement and unsettling of the squad may delay our return to the football league.
The loyal supporters of this club deserve league football.”

“Towns performances started going south like the mind set of the club after the home win semi final against Dartford, no question about that, just look at the results since then. Don't know if we will recover enough confidence for the play offs. UTM”

“Just listened to Scott's post match interview on Humberside(BBC Sport web site).

Unbelievable;Town played ''alright'' just lacked cutting edge in last third and down in confidence.Partly right but where was the effort, reference to constant poor distribtion and certain players with an apparent disinterested approach ?

We deserved to be beaten by 3 or 4 goals by a mediocre Team.

    Losing confidence in him..”

“again I say the wembley game is the worst thing this season to happen to Grimsby town and its sticking out a mile players are more concerned about playing at wembley than getting out tis league and what about the managers how many more excuses are they going to come up with three years to get town back in the football league. cant see that going to happen”

“Confidence is a major thing in any sport,we just dont have any at the minute.
Again loan players and players on short term contracts flattering to deceive.
I feel there has being to much chopping and changing of the team also of late, and we look a disjointed bunch to say the least!!
Why has Hannah being dropped today? or was he injured?? Also dont think it is constructive to see Scott getting angry with players on the sidelines, try to encourage the players scotty not rollicke them when something goes wrong.”

“The team can only be on a stay down bonus to play this bad over the last three matches.....maybe time for hurst to go and a new face inspire us for the last few matches,,,,,, i am not convinced the club wants league football.......if they do why is there no motivation.... at mansfield the teams heads droop when we conceded and quite honestly they havent lifted.

soon will be the fixture backlog cry and a long journey and big pitch of wembley followed by more long journeys.......it is simple the cup has got in the way, it has helped to the backlog and rested players who needed to get us out of the league.....

thats cup is for clubs who have no ambition or chance of getting out of the conference,,, i rest my case”

“A Season ticket holder for 30 years, consumed with a heavy expenditure on Wembley tickets bought for the entire family.., and normally an eternal optimist.

However.., hugely disappointed this week. A lack of player effort and support for team members, poor application and a self centred approach from too many players.

What are the management Team doing to the quality squad they have capably assembled.?

They dont appear to be able to inspire or motive them ,even after half time team talks.
Perhaps it because they can't respect Scott's foul mouth constant abuse during all the first halves...”
