Heart unit campaigners fail to delay judicial review of proceedings
AN ATTEMPT by campaigners fighting to save a "vital" heart unit to delay a judicial review of the proceedings has failed.
As reported, the parents of young cardiac patients have banded together to fight against the planned closure of Leeds Children's Heart Unit – the closest to our area.
The Joint Committee Of Primary Care Trusts (JCPCT) made the initial decision in July to reduce the number of children's heart units across the country from 11 to six or seven.
The Save Our Surgery group had hoped to delay the review until an Independent Reconfiguration Panel (IRP)'s review – called for by Leicester's Joint Health and Overview and Scrutiny Committee and backed by its counterparts in Yorkshire and Humber – is completed at the end of February.

However, yesterday they were told this would not be possible, in a move that has been welcomed by Sir Neil McKay, chairman of the JCPCT.
He said: "Today's judgment is a victory for families, parents and patients across the country. Save Our Surgery brought a strange request to the court – to delay its own judicial review. This would have significantly delayed long overdue improvements to children's heart services for months."
