DO your bit for the community.

That is the rallying call from the chairman of Cleethorpes In Bloom as judging day looms.

Bob Callison's plea comes after he was left "devastated" by vandalism at Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway – one of the floral highlights of the route being taken by East Midlands In Bloom judges.

He wants everyone – not just residents – to make sure the area sparkles for the judges tomorrow.

If you're out and about in Cleethorpes and see litter, pick it up. If you have a garden lining the route, give it a little spruce-up.

Mr Callison said: "If all residents can make sure the resort is clean and that their gardens are looking great then that will really help us.

"If homeowners can put out some hanging baskets and make sure there is no litter around it will be a great help.

"We believe the route is the best showcase of the resort's gardens and we really hope we can be as successful as last year."

He said the two youths who used scooters to smash through the entrance of the King's Road railway to rip up scores of flowers "must be punished".

He said: "These people cannot be allowed to get away with what they have done.

"I am absolutely devastated that anybody would carry out such a deliberate act of vandalism.

"We will be replanting all the flowers."

The railway is in line for a special award as part of the judging and will be compared to other retail and business premises in the area.

As reported, last year, Cleethorpes In Bloom was awarded the gold medal in the coastal category of East Midlands In Bloom and will represent the region in Britain In Bloom.
