Heroes who chased man who stabbed pregnant Claire Wilson tell their story
WOULD you have the courage to chase down a man who had brutally stabbed a young woman to death in the street?
Today we speak to DJ Rick Emsley and Grimsby man Stephen Page who did just that, catching murderer Alan McMullan in the wake of his cold-blooded attack on 21-year-old Claire Wilson and her unborn child, April, in June last year.
-
Stephen Page has recieved a police award for bravery for his part in apprehending murderer Alan McMullan. Here he is pictured with his mum Jean, right, and sister Janice, left.
Speaking following the news that 54-year-old McMullan is now to appeal against the length of his sentence – after being told he will serve a minimum of 20 years – the pair played down their role in catching the killer.
In today's Grimsby Telegraph Crime Reporter Paul Smith finds out more about their role in the day's tragic events.

“I have to agree with David from Florida... just think of the savings!
I understand the potential for chaos and tragic loss by arming our citizenry, (especially the likes who would leap at the chance to own a firearm), but feel that at the minute too much is invested in the rights of criminals and law abiding citizens are seen as an easy catch by the judiciary.
My recommendation would be to reintroduce "Hue and Cry", and make it the duty of those law abiding to hound down thugs and crims when caugh tin the act... Giving a complete immunity to prosecution to anyone who kicks this type of scum to death, thereby saving us the costs of trials and prisons, etc... But then again some might say I am too hard on the scum that is overrunning this once fine country... In my mind too many lives are being blighted by the actions of a few belligerent individuals such as this attention seeker, (McMullen)...
I certainly hope he isnt getting preferential treatment in prison... let him out in general population and give extra rations to the lifer who deals final justice to the family of Claire and her baby...”

“How the hell is shooting somebody 'reacting positively'??!
The situation described below would involve making a snap decision. What if, in Claires situation, the people chasing McMullan where armed, but in the ensuing panic managed to 'take care' of someone else accidentally with a '9mm round'? There were other people around when it happened you know. Death is final, it can't be taken back and not you, or anyone else, has the right to decide who should die and who shouldn't.
Staying alive is 'reacting positively'. It's people like you that start wars. Get over yourself.”

“20yrs for taking 2 lives? Fortunately I live in a society where animals like this are executed. As for chasing him down, not at my age and no need to. I, like many of my contemporaries have been issued a CWP (Concealed Weapons Permit) and regularly carry a handgun. Here it is a citizen's duty to react positively towards any threat to life, limb or property "by any available means". The courts would not have had the expense of prosecuting or imprisoning him. It would all have been taken care of with a 9mm round.”

“I have more than enough courage to chase down this scum. I hope I never have to.”
