A TREASURE trove of rare antiques worth thousands of pounds is being auctioned off after being discovered inside a "junk-filled" council house on Grimsby's Nunsthorpe estate.

When hoarder George Howell, passed away, his family set about clearing the 50 years of collectables, which he had crammed his two bedroom prefab bungalow in Walmsgate Close.

As they sifted through the floor-to-ceiling towers of items, valuable antiques - including a first edition James Bond book, Victorian children's annuals and 20th century postcards, worth £500 each - started coming to light.

After 12 days of hard and skips worth of rubbish being removed, the family packed more than 10,000 items off to Brown and Co Auctioneers, in Brigg, to be valued.

Dubbed the "Howell Hoard," the antiques are now being put into their own day-long sale on September 10 - and are expected to raised up to £15,000.

Auctioneer Craig Bewick said: "It is pretty unusual for an auction room to devote a whole day to the sale of just a single collection but then the Howell Hoard is an exceptionally unusual collection.

"For almost half a century bachelor George Howell devoted his life to collecting. He did not deal or sell anything on, he did not swap with other collectors, often he did not even unpack it, he just kept it."

Former builder George, 74, who shared the house with his brother Ralph, until he passed away two years ago, aged 68, started collecting postcards in the 1960s and moved onto children's books, figurines, and soon anything bygone or collectable that took his fancy.

In his younger days George would cycle to Louth for sales, but as he got older and began using a mobility scooter, he would journey instead to Grimsby and Cleethorpes for his buying fix.

“I want to start by clearing something up. George's 'junk' was not coined by the Telegraph or anyone affiliated with the Telegraph, but by his family. It was a family joke which appears to have been taken out of context.
Yes there are one or two inaccuracies, one of which is the number of first edition James Bond books, let's just say... there's definately more than one of those.
Re. Jim, point me to where the Telegraph states, either on here or in its newspaper, that the council will recieve some money. They aren't, and it hasn't been written down so how you come to such conclusion I do not know.
Re. Ann Other & rob, read the first paragraph of this post. But I appreciate you trying to defend his honour, but I assure you it's fine. Nobody has overstepped the mark.
Re. Clare Massey, yes Uncle George could spot a valuable piece out and would have a better than most idea of what he was looking for but believe me, as one of his relatives who helped clear his house, he was most certainly a hoarder. But that's ok, that doesn't detract from the man he was, if anything it brings the family closer and did do while the group of us helped clear his house. Being of a younger age, it was great to hear my Dad, Uncle's, Aunt's and Cousins talk about him.
As my sister(s) have already told you, he was the kindest man you could imagine, and yes it would be funny to think of him looking at all this and the fuss it's causing.
Hope that clears up the lose ends. Thanks all for commenting and looking out for our Uncle George.”

“Quite correct, and indeed a misleading headline, Come on grimsby telegraph, this gentleman obviously knew what he was doing because he collected quality antiques.
Unfortunatly in many of todays minimalistic lifestyles a few magazines on a rack for more than a couple of weeks would be considered hoarding.
Pensioners are some of the most intersting people around with their keepsakes from the past and their love for things nostalgic to themselves, if not for people like George, many of the youngsters of today would know ittle about history and ageing items of the yester-year becuse although history may well be taught in schools, it's the little things like Goerges collections of postcards and childrens books that would be forgotton by time.
I say good on you George, and your aging treasures from the past will undoubtably bring great joy to another collector just like yourself...perhaps someone cycling off to auction to add to a collection keepsakes just like you did many yers ago.”
