A HOSEPIPE ban will soon be imposed onto all homes across the borough.

Anglian Water has announced the ban will be enforced from Thursday, April 5, in the hope of combating the effects of the driest 18 month period in more than a century.

A small number of exemptions will be made to protect jobs, livelihoods and the infirm.

Customers will also still be able to water their gardens, if they use a watering can rather than a hose, and can still clean their cars, provided they use a bucket.

“I spent a few years in Jersey back in the 90's and they have a desalination plant, Takes 3 days to fire up and costs £25000 a day to run, population around 100,000 not that far off GY. £25K doesn't seem that much in the grand scheme of things.

Water restrictions won't bother me I don't drink the stuff unless it's been fermented and I sure as hell don't wash in it!”

“I'm on a meter, allowed 29 cubic metres per year yet only use half that. No way will Anglian water reduce my charges. Billed @£180. I figure I can use half of my domestic amount down at the allotments. Bill for that, it is pottable though they say not because their is no non return valve in the supply. A walloping big £5, near as damn it. The next thing you know will be a push for everyone to have water butts on the downspouts. Once there is some takeup, hey presto. A additional charge of £25. Much like the brown bin fiasco.”

“A hosepipe ban? This country is surrounded by water, it rains a lot and some minnion tells me I can't use water but some Millionaire puts my water bill up.

Why do we put up with it?”

“I don't think thermal desalination will ever be possible as it is too energy intensive. A pipe dream would be to hang vacuum evaporator plant on the back of thermal power plants BUT.......! Pressure desalination (reverse osmosis) of the size needed to supply large populations is very expensive and complicated, not only to operate and maintain, but renewing membranes is not yet commercially viable.

Comparing aquifer volumes and capacities as a moderator to the ocean levels may not take account of the vast oceanic volume or global surface area? Over large time scales the water cycle from and to the oceans...rain/rivers etc presumably gives a stable balance.

Ironically those damn useless wind turbines could provide energy to intermittently pump water around England's extensive canal system. The UK always has a massive surplus of water (in the wrong locations), especially in the North and West.

    http://tinyurl.com/358beto

Talking of wind energy, tonight they are performing abysmally due to a massive anti-cyclone blocking wind systems. They are currently producing only a measly 0·3% of the UK demand, around 100MWe. There have been successive lies about the UK always having wind somewhere...well not tonight!

Electrical energy is critical and is needed continuously, wind cannot provide that need but could serve water transfer needs as pumping stations wouldn't matter if down for a few days.

Ironically, only recently, AWA announced a new transfer scheme to move water from Covenham to Boston. The increase in population demands ever more water resources!”

“If there is such a shortage of water here then why are Anglia water building a pipeline to take water away from Covenham reservior to Boston”
