WIDE open windows on balmy summer evenings will soon be a distant memory as one of the coldest predicted winters in recent years closes in.

When temperatures outside plummet, it is only natural for chilly homeowners to reach for their thermostats, sending heating bills – along with plumes of wasted energy – through the roof.

As the 10:10 campaign towards improving eco-awareness in the town gathers momentum, local environment bosses are preparing to roll out free loft insulation in Cleethorpes.

A week of green-themed giveaways and activities will get under way at the Renaissance Shop on Monday. But it is not just those residents who are able to make it to the council-managed Victoria Street event who can benefit.

Hundreds of homeowners in Daubney Street and Barcroft Street will be targeted for free loft insulation – worth around £250 – if their terraced property was built before 1920.

The door-to-door offer is expected to save residents a packet on their winter heating bills.

One Grimsby grandmother has already had her free insulation installed.

Georgina Berry, 57, of Broadway, said: "I was lucky enough to win a competition at the start of the year for free loft insulation and although I've not had a chance to appreciate the benefits yet, I'm expecting a warm winter without having to pay through the nose.

"Having four young grandchildren, it is important the house stays warm and of course it is also a help when it is free. I think the scheme is a fantastic idea."

For more information on how to apply for free loft insulation, call the Energy Saving Trust free on 0800 512012.

“"Global warming" was not invented by Maggie,Jo. She merely publicsized it. I am a treehugger. Did it help get my vote? No. I voted Green. Where did get me? Not very far. Nearly thirty years later, one Green MP in my own country. Whoopie ! The future is bright, because the future is green.”

“Only proven fact is that the west is causing global warming.
An excuse to elevate our taxes, under the pretence that we in Europe cause global warming.
Like I say, travel outside the EU and see what they are doing to alleviate global warming !
Zilch absolutely Zilch, but no our gov says we have to pay to reduce carbon emissions.”

Harolds more or less has it right, Neil. She was the first world leader to promote AGW internationally - as a hypothesis.”

“Global warming was invented by Margaret Thatcher in late 1983 as a way of achieving popularity amongst floating voters. Her aim was to promote this clearly ridiculous premise as fact and invent easily manageable ways of reversing it. With her apparent success at achieving this straightforward task the uncertain voters swung in the favour of the Thatcherite government and the Tories held power for a further 10 years. Global warming, which is pure fiction has again resurfaced as a purely vote winning topic in recent years.”

“Not sure how much money is actually saved with double glazing and insulation, I think we just get used to being warmer and tend not to turn down that thermostat!”

“Bovis wrote: "Global warming is real - this is a proven fact."

I think Joshua is questioning the *supposed cause*, Bovis .. ie he means *Anthropological* Global Warming - which isn't yet proven.”

“If you are interested in this subject,Bovis. Try the New York Times "green inc"section,ny.times.com. Just use their "search" facility. It is free, but you need to register. The USA is not exactly reknowned on this subject, but even they are onboard.”

“You're a bit all over the place there, Joshua.

You're spot on with your first few comments. Micro-generation is something all councils should be picking up on - it's a chance for councils to print their own money while helping the environment.

But why put global warming in quotation marks?
Global warming is real - this is a proven fact.
The cause may be disputed by a small fraction of the World's scientists, but the majority are in no doubt.
You state you believe it is caused by a population boom & rich countries ignoring the threat - but you continue to use quotation marks.

Your point of livestock emitting methane is also valid, so why continue to use those quotations & make up some conspiracy about governments raising taxes?
Governments have always raised taxes, & they don't really need an excuse to do so.

Free loft insulation for a couple of streets in Cleethorpes is a very, very small step.
But a walk of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.”
