Hungry thief stole ice cream
A THIEF who "couldn't afford" to put food on the table appeared before Grimsby Magistrates' Court for stealing ice cream.
David King, 38, of Hainton Avenue, Grimsby, admitted putting two tubs of Ben and Jerry's into his pockets and leaving without paying for them, as he did his food shop in Sainsbury's Alexandra Retail Park store on February 21.
Rebecca Dalby, prosecuting, said King had paid for the rest of his shopping, but attempted to leave the store without paying for the ice cream.
He was detained by the security guard and admitted what he had done, adding he "did not have enough money to pay for them".

King, speaking in his own defence, said: "There have been times when I have been struggling to put food in the cupboards.
"I don't make a habit of doing this kind of thing."
He was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim's surcharge.

“If he's struggling to put food in his cupboard then ice cream isn't the best choice.”

“Not everyone can afford ben and jerrys and we would buy that as a treat. If he was struggling to put food on the table then he wouldnt be stealing ice cream”
