IMMINGHAM has hit the ground running with its first entry into East Midlands In Bloom.

That was the view of the judges, who yesterday conducted a three-hour tour of the town.

As reported, Immingham is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Cleethorpes and Grimsby, who have both tasted success in the floral competition.

It is competing in the Town category, where it is up against Bourne in Lincolnshire, Matlock in Derbyshire and Keyworth in Nottinghamshire.

Although Immingham In Bloom chairman Stewart Swinburn believes outright victory may not be possible this year, he believes a good showing will help "dispel the myth that Immingham is the forgotten town".

Find out what the judges saw – and what they said – in today's Grimsby Telegraph.

“I have just re-read Michael's comment and have to say that I fail to see what is so negative about it. He says it as I see it... a purely voluntary gardening activity that most of us have been doing in our own time and at our own expense for well over 20 years.”

“I support Janet's sentiments entirely. Mrs Calladine deserves her special recognition. For over 20 years, she has been a splendid example for others to follow when it comes to maintaining the areas around our homes. Come wind or shine, Mrs Calladine will be seen planting flower beds, dead-heading flowers, cutting lawns and generally creating a wonderful environment in which to live. I too offer thanks to her, and all the other neighbours who follow her lead. Well done everyone!”

“To the person named 'unbelievable', why did you not put your name? Now we are all getting the finger pointed at us thanks to you. Michael deserves praise for his contribution to the overall appearance of our street. He has put his own money and time into it. He is entitled to his opinion and does not deserve the personal attack.”

“Yes, UNBELIEVABLE this is a community scheme and when people don't want to take part you cannot abuse them. You cannot try to drive them out of their homes just because they will not do as they are told....thats dictatorship,
Some very nice people do not like gardening so what are we to do with them. This is a free country and an Englishmans home is his castle, when we start intimidating people to fall in line then this scheme wants dumping,
Intimidation is wrong no matter how good the intention.
Take a step back and think again. People will volunteer readily for a good cause but will not be bullied, and neither will I”

“As a resident of Mullway for the last 23 years I totally agree with the comments of Janet and Michael. We take great pride in our gardens and have worked hard, for many years, to create this lovely, friendly environment. To read in the local paper that this is all thanks to someone who many people in this street have never heard of is incredibly upsetting and deflects the attention from the true inspiration of the street, Pauline Calladine. She works tirelessly day in, day out, even attending to the gardens of infirm neighbours and council lands. We have always been proud of our little community and will continue to be for another 20 plus years.”

“Why don't you move Michael..or should I say "Ex" Councillor Perrin? Preferably to another county or even better, country. How can you be so negative over such a good news story. Get a life, get some friends and get a new address.”

“For many years most of the residents of Mullway have worked on our gardens and street, not for a cup or reward, but because we are live here. This has got better each year without any outside help or IN BLOOM committees.
It has never been a competition between houses, just a friendly rivalry to get better. I don't want to be organized or set up as a photo shoot for our councillors , I like things as they are.
The beauty of doing a bit of gardening is the freedom to please yourself and get some fresh air and exercise, Anyone can get a beautiful garden off the back of a truck from a garden centre, it just takes lots of money, which not everyone has. Nature has flowers in bloom every year, but what makes our street special is to see people go outside their gates and tidy up their fronts in the street. With no organization or reward people take responsibility for their own area, at no expense to the taxpayers
So Please lets not get carried away or too organized. When it ceases to be a pleasant hobby it becomes a chore”

“I have been a resident of Mullway for several years and have always maintained the council grass and put in a border around the council tree and several householders have done the same. A special mention should be given to Mrs Calladine who also won best garden for her devotion and committment to creating this beautiful jewel in the crown of Immingham. She works tirelessly and at her own expense.
Keep up the good work neighbours.
We all deserve a pat on the back.”
