Jailed docks manager must pay back half of ill-gotten gains
A DOCKS manager who is in jail for stealing more than £75,000 from his employers has been ordered to pay back less than half the amount when he is released.
Nigel Piggott has been slapped with a confiscation order for £32,101 under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) legislation as prosecutors try to claw back his ill-gotten gains.
If the 49-year-old – who, as reported on the front page of the Grimsby Telegraph, was jailed for two-and-a-half years last October – fails to come up with the money by next May's deadline, he will have to serve another 15 months behind bars.
A judge at Teesside Crown Court allowed Piggott 12 months rather than the usual six to find the cash because he is not expected to be released from custody until early next year.

Piggott, of Windlesham Avenue, Grimsby, worked as a maintenance manager for Teesside-based PD Ports Services when he devised the con which went on for five years, as reported.
He tricked his bosses into paying him overtime – simply by invoicing them in someone else's name – and received more than £75,000 before being rumbled in 2010.
The "ghost" worker – a boatman employed to help Piggott's team at Immingham Docks berth vessels and release them – had been paid as much as £300 a week from early 2005.
Piggott spent the cash on exotic holidays to places such as Thailand, Florida, Singapore, Puerto Rico and Prague, as well as on expensive dental work and top restaurants.
He stole more than £75,000 before being rumbled last year when he was laid off and his successor was unable to find any trace of the casual worker he had added to the books.
When Piggott heard his job was at risk during cost-cutting, he destroyed computer files, and deleted the names and numbers of part-time staff from his works mobile phone.
At an earlier hearing, a judge ruled that Piggott "had a chip on his shoulder" about not being paid overtime and how much work he had to do for his £28,000-a-year salary.

“No-one should be commenting without knowing all the facts.
As I said previously Nigel never stole anything; he did physical work for what he was paid.
We are still awaiting the results of Police investigation into "threatening phone call" which was supposedly made to Colin Wilkinson (Nigel's "successor" despite the fact that Nigel was being made REDUNDANT)
It was said in open court that Mr Wilkinson had recieved a call from a "witheld"number" warning him not to appearin court; the implication being that this was made either by, or on behalf of, Nigel.
This poses the Question " why would he"? Nigel was anxious that Mr Wilkinson be cross examined, as, at the times that Nigel was on leave the job was run by Mr Wilkinson in exactly the same manner, including working alongside Mr Mooney, yet no charges were raised against him.
Also, whilst awaiting sentence Nigel's solicitor informed him that PD had acknowledged that Mr Mooney had indeed worked for them.
Anyone signing a Management contract with with PD ports in the future needs to be aware that they own you 24/7!
You may be a Manager on £28,000 a year but you can be expected to work hands on,on the dockside for many extra hours on a regular basis, with no more pay for your labours.
Nigel was working up to 20 hrs a day and was on call at all times.
What then was his hourly pay worth!
However, those who care about him know what went on & those that don't, don't matter”

“On the face of it he should be made to pay all of his ill-gotten gains back. But you can't get blood out of a stone, and if he has insufficient money and saleable assets there is no point in pursuing him for what he hasn't got. Even a bankrupt is entitled to keep the tools of his trade and the clothes he stands up in. Judges investigate a convict's means, and the results of their enquiries are not made public. So dannii889 has a point.”

“ukchrisuk
If he fails to pay up and ends up doing 15 months, he then will have a seizure order made against him for goods assets to be seized. The debt is not cleared until its paid.”

“So does this mean that if he doesn't repay the the debt and get served with another 15 months, is the debt then cleared? if it is cleared who says crime doesn't pay!”
