MANY hands made light work of Grimsby's bid for golden glory in this year's national In Bloom competition.

The town's In Bloom organisers praised all the keen gardeners and community activists who transformed their neighbourhoods in the colourful oases.

At the end of a guided tour with the East Midlands In Bloom judges, chairman of Grimsby in Bloom Ernie Brown hailed the wonderful work by the town's residents.

He told supporters: "It is like a jigsaw with each of you a piece joining up with others to create one beautiful picture."

Following his first visit to Grimsby, judge Peter Benham said: "It has been a community effort. It is wonderful to see so many people coming together. When you go to other places it is often left to the council to do everything, but here it is your community and you are all pulling together and that is excellent.

Admiring the iconic Dock Tower is judge Debbie Scott.

"What I have seen today I have been impressed with. There is lots of community involvement and it is good to see the support you receive from businesses and from the council.

"We still have some more visits to make, so I can't come to any conclusions yet, but you certainly have a good entry."

“Wow! something spooky is going on here! My comment has disappeared as quickly as the tubs at the junction of Chelmsford Avenue and Cambridge Road! hope I didn't strike a nerve! I was merely questioning why they have vanished now that the judging is over! I am assuming they were placed there by NELC? and as a NELC council tax payer was wondering why they had been removed, they didn't appear to have been vandalised!?”

“I especially liked the big tubs placed at the junction of Cambridge Road and Chelmsford Avenue, but after yesterday's judging they seem to have disappeared! Why? they looked lovely and brightened the area up! Surely NELC weren't conning the judges!?!?!”
