She will head to the South American country on October 7 for 10 weeks, where she will live with a family in one of the poor rural areas.

"It is one of the poorest countries in South America," she added.

"The rural areas have the highest amount of unemployment and they are also the largest communities.

"I will be living with a local family in a small rural community which has little infrastructure and lacks basic amenities.

"Many of the villages have no water supply and villagers have to walk miles to the wells.

"I will be working to install gravity-fed water pumps in these areas to bring fresh water to the people."

Katie has a strong interest in the difference between the developed and developing world.

"I wrote my dissertation on water usage in the developed world, so getting the chance to study how the developing world uses the resource will be interesting," she said.

Global charity Raleigh International focuses on sustainable development, by providing expeditions and volunteer projects to help alleviate the plight of people in poverty.

It organises expeditions for volunteers, including students taking gap years, retirees as well as corporate, school and adventure expeditions for youth groups.

"I would like to one day work for a charity like Raleigh," said Katie.

"They have improved the lives of millions of people and I think it is vital to support them."
