KIWI Test star Peter Fulton is refusing to write-off Cleethorpes CC's season and is backing the Meggies to come good.

James Osmond's men were targeting the upper reaches of the Yorkshire ECB Premier League back in April but an inconsistent campaign has left them 11th in the division with just nine matches remaining.

And with only six victories so far this year, it's fair to say Clee's first-teamers have fallen short of their high pre-season expectations.

However, overseas pro Fulton – who has played Test and ODI cricket for his native New Zealand – believes there is still plenty to play for.

"It's certainly too early to write-off this season and start worrying about next year," he said.

"I think we can still go on a run and win four or five games in a row and work our way back up the table.

"If we can finish somewhere near the middle of the table that's probably not a bad effort from the position we're in at the moment."

The 31-year-old batsman admitted the side have been disappointed with their performances so far.

"It's hard to say what's been missing," he said. "Obviously we haven't played well enough but it's difficult to put your finger on the exact problem.

"Some games we've batted well and bowled poorly and other games we've bowled well and batted poorly, so there's no specific area, we just haven't been good enough in all aspects of the game at one time.

"It's not rocket science – not enough guys have put their hand up and performed well enough consistently.

"We've got a mix of some really experienced guys and some young kids so you can't blame it on the inexperience of the side. It's just been that overall as a team we haven't performed up to standard."

Despite his international pedigree and distinguished first-class career with Canterbury, even Fulton himself took a few games to find his feet in the Yorkshire League.

Since then, the hard-hitter has acclimatised to English conditions well and smashed his way to three centuries and three 50s.

"The wickets at the start of the season, especially down here at Chichester Road, did a little bit, and they weren't easy for anyone to score runs on. But once I got through that and had a bit of luck go my way things turned around.

"That's just the way cricket goes. You have your ups and downs and you've just got to try and make the most of it when things are going your way.

"The standard of cricket has been really good and the standard of the pitches has been as well, which makes a difference to the quality of the cricket.

"At this level you don't have to adjust your game too much for a poor wicket, you can bat normally and play your shots, so it's been very enjoyable.

"If I can carry on my current form for the rest of the season then hopefully that will help us win some games and move up the league."
