Laceby bypass speed camera set on fire
VANDALS have torched a speed camera on the Laceby Bypass for the second time in months.
One of the cameras was set alight in the early hours of Monday – just five months after it was targeted by arsonists.
Although the cameras on the stretch of the A46 are not currently in operation, the act of vandalism has angered council officials and parish councillors.
Coun Martin Greenbeck, the chairman of Laceby Parish Council, said: "All vandalism is to be despised, especially when it is done to safety equipment.
"If people don't agree with the speed camera, this is not the way to show it.
"The parish council has always been of the opinion that we need two roundabouts at the entrances to Laceby and for the entrances to be closed. However, we know that is an expensive route to go down."
Dave Poucher, principal traffic engineer for North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "The recent vandalism does nothing to prevent Police enforcement of the speed limit on the Bypass. This continues to be able to be undertaken using mobile cameras.
"Acts such as this do nothing to improve the safety of anyone using the By-pass. Given the tragic history of fatal and serious collisions at this junction you have to question the reasoning behind such action."
The cameras on the bypass were the first fixed speed cameras installed in North East Lincolnshire – the first step in a £100,000 council scheme to cut road deaths on the notorious stretch of the A46.
One of the cameras was set alight by arsonists on New Year's Eve last year.
And firefighters from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service were called out once again, at 1.45am on Monday.
A spokesperson for the Humberside Safety Camera Partnership said: "This is mindless vandalism which can put peoples lives at risk."
Anyone with information about the latest incident is asked to contact Humberside Police on 0845 6060 222.

“am glad this happened speed camera's are a big money scam end of. if they cared about people they would put them outside schools not on a empty bypass wear its quiet safe to speed. i am not saying its ok to speed but i hope you see my point, also people get a ticket and fined for getting caught 5mph over the limit. BUT YOU CATCH TO IDIOTS ON HERE THAT WAS CAUGHT ON CAMERA BEATING SOMEONE UP AND THEY GET AWAY WITH IT. THE POLICE REALLY CARE ABOUT PEOPLES SAFETY! ONLY WHEN THEY ARE MAKING MONEY OUT OF IT!”

“Me, here,GY,
Says and I quote his 27 May, 15-32 post,
"some did it over agin and they out right just for it to site thire not working." unquote.
I've read it a couple of times and still can't make head or tail of what he is rambling on about. But he never has made any sense, perhaps that is because he is just 'brain dead.'”

“Having lived grimsby and stocksbridge(sheffield) for may years I know both the laceby bypass well, anyway when they built the bypass in stocksbridge . It was described as the Killer Road in recent years. Originally part of the aborted M67 Trans Pennine Motorway, it was downgraded to a dual carriageway and then to its present format of a single carriageway with crawler lanes.
Completed in 1989 it lies on the North side of the valley. Bad driving and speeding caused many deaths until a slight redesign with better signage coupled with SPECS cameras (these measure your average speed over a set distance - no point braking just for them!) stopped the fatalities.
Whilst still not perfect its a vast improvement
Maybe the highways sgency or councils should look into putting these sort of cameras up as it will measure the speed along the whole road not just the bit where the cameras are, And these cameras are much higher up in the air so they wont get destoryed by fire.”

“i think road safety cameras are a good thing in fact there should be more of them also bring in higher fines and ban second offenders and if you dont like the sound of this answers very simple dont speed”

“I can agree with people not wanting safety cameras. I cant agree with people speeding, which is UNLAWFUL. So lets do away with the cameras, and have a law that says speed and get caught you will lose your licence and have to pay an insurance excess when you get it back. So then speed and get caught, you can't blame anyone else, can you. Stick to the speed limit (follow the law) no problem.”
